I just don't agree with virtual crimes getting more time than physical ones. A guy breaks into a mom and pop store, and steals all their computer systems, he gets "Theft under $5,000", which is basically a slap on the hand and sent on their way.
A guy does ping -f to a megacorporation's server, or downloads a movie made by a megacorporation, and gets prison or sued for millions.
The law system is completely retarded when it comes to this stuff.
As for my servers thankfully here in Canada there is a cap on how much they can charge you. There has been some new stricter laws that came out but because they are capped, nobody has been charged yet that I know of. It's not like the states where you can get sued for millions for each mp3 or movie. I don't recall what the max is, it's like 15k or something. It would still be a devastating amount for most individuals, but it's something that's still somewhat manageable with a loan. I think you get 3 strikes as well before you get sued. Not too sure and have yet to hear anyone getting hit. Though to be fair it seems even the states have slown down with that. You used to hear of grandma's and people who don't even download getting sued and seems they stopped doing that.
...
But anyway that's totally off topic at this point. I simply said it's easy to get into jail if someone wanted to actually go, and it blew up.
I still think OP's best bet if he is truly serious is to buy a small piece of land in an unorganized township, and build there. Start with the tent and an outhouse because you need a place to poop, and then build something a bit bigger and more winterized, with wood stove. Can probably build a "worlds worst shed" style house for under a grand and make it half decent enough to live in. But I also think mental help may be in order before even considering any of that.
I do like the idea of living off grid in nature myself though, it's my eventual goal, but I'm kinda aiming for the luxery suite. Full blown multi story cottage overseeing a lake, with surrounding porch, wood stove, A/C, a giant garage, lots of toys, solar power etc. Cheaper to live and funner quality of life once everything is built the way I like. Just more initial work to get there, and a bit more maintenance.
