I need a decent CRT that will be used for playing games such as Far Cry and HL2 for $250 or less. I want atleast 17".

If you can somehow wait a bit and save up $300, you can get a nice 21" that will do 2048X1536 at 75Hz, and all other resolutions at much better refresh rates.

If you cant do that, just get any moniter that has a good rating and can do 1280 at 85hz.

Don't get anything less than 19"!!

I suggest the Viewsonic G90FB. Can easily be found for <$250 shipped.

I gots me a dell Trinitron (SONY) from EBAY for $125+$55 shipping. Its a 21" It does 1024x768 @100hz. It is a beautiful monitor.
There is a guy who sells huge amounts of these sony trinitrons on ebay. I cant remember his username though, I bought over a year ago

FOr $250 you could get a nice 21" crt.

That is a great monitor as long as those aperture grill horizontal lines across the screen don't bug you... I'm a Shadowmask man myself... I just can't stand those lines on the AG monitors. Otherwise, they are great CRTs (if the lines don't bug you).

Aperture Grill monitors have two "dampning lines" that go horizontally across the screen at roughly 1/3 up and 1/3 down the screen (running from right to left across). Some folks say they can't see them, and that is normally true, but they definately are there on certain screens (like all-white when you are in Word and the like).

As I mentioned, some folks don't mind them at all... it's a personal thing... AG monitors tend to be a tad sharper then Shadowmask, but the lines really bug me (once again a personal thing).

Excellent Shadowmask monitors include the Samsung 997DF and the Viewsonic G90FB. I believe both monitors come in biege and black models... there are also larger versions as the ones I linked you to are 19"... Viewsonic has a 22" Shadowmask flat monitor too, I'm not sure about Samsung, but they probably do too.

I own the Viewsonic G90FB and also have an older Samsung 955DF, both of which I like.

So the lines are hardly visible and 1/3" down from the top and 1/3" up from the bottom of teh screen?

Yeah... they go all the way across from right to left at the positions I mentioned... if you're gaming it's highly unlikely you'll notice them, but if you are doing desktop work you might notice a pair of slight grey lines going across the screen... I definately noticed them on a model I bought and took home... I ended up taking it back because it was like a wart I couldn't stop looking at.

Some folks don't mind them, and others can't stand them... like I said, it's a personal thing... you might want to go to a local computer store and see if they have any AG monitors, and ask to put it on an all white screen... you'll see what I'm talking about and you can make a decision for yourself. AG monitors are great OTHER then those lines. To some folks like myself, it's a deal-breaker, and I prefer Shadowmasks (I'm not the only one)... others call us crazy and swear by AG... it's a personal thing. You might find the lines annoying, or you may not notice them... Your mileage may vary.

EDIT:
Yeah, that NEC Shadowmask is a good one too... gotta love Shadowmask monitors... saving the world from annoying lines.

Why do you hate it? I'm looking into a 19'in monitor as well.

I don't know why he hates his 997df. I love mine, even though it's the only shadowmask monitor I've ever owned (I usually prefer aperture grilles). Samsung makes extremely reliable products, and by the time I'm at the end of my three year warranty, I'll probably be looking into Samsung's super-thin CRTs that are coming out later this year.

Two little lines that go across, yep, they're 15 micron diameter wires to hold the aperture grille steady. You won't see them when playing a game, but you will see them when using Word. I've used monitors like that for the past 15 years so I've gotten used to it, I don't even really notice them unless I look hard. I'd estimate that the lines are maybe 1/6 the thickness of a pixel. But to someone who isn't used to it, they stick out like a sore thumb.
