That line is never noticeable. you have to look for it. On a white page is shows faintly.

GET THAT MONITOR!!!

I have that monitor its the bestest. never see the lines unless you look for it.
Great Deal for a 21" Much better than a 21"LCD. It is big though.

So there's only 2 lines? One at the top and the other at the bottom?
They're not at the top and bottom, they are roughly a third of the way from the top or bottom going across. If your screen was 12" tall, you'd notice a line going across at about 4" and 8".

I knew the AG fans would come out of the woodwork on this. As I said, those lines are VERY PERSONAL... some folks either don't notice them or "get used to them". Others, like myself, can't stand them and stick with Shadowmask.

I still recomend you find a store that has both Shadowmask and AG and make your decision at the store, then you can safely order one on-line with forehand knowledge of what you're getting. I would hate for you to be one of the people the lines would annoy and find this out only after having it arrive by mail on your doorstep, and you're stuck with a 50lb beast that you can't stand looking at.

Either that, or just forget about an AG monitor and just get a shadowmask... there are NO LINES on a Shadowmask.

It used to be that AG monitors had a far better picture than shadow mask monitors. But these days they're all good.

The only CRT I wouldn't recommned would be one of those "pseudo-flat" tubes... the really cheap type that have a curved image but some extra corrective glass on the front to make the image appear to be mostly flat. We have some awful monitors like that at school, they're only about 2 years old but they'll give you a headache in minutes. What a bargain.

I have a older 21" Shadow Mask Nokia 445xpro and love it. It is NOT flat, nor is it psuedo-flat, but the slight curve does not bug me. It is not as sharp as it used to be as it is 5 years old, but still works great as a second monitor and a gaming monitor. I used to used it for all gaming but my 2005fpw has replaced it in that instance so now I run it at 1800x1440 @ 75hz and use it for trillian, WMP, temperature monitor, task manager, etc...

I bought mine from half.com for $380 about 3.5 years ago, it was 1.5 years used as a leased monitor. The transaction was relativly painless and I reccomend them if you can find a good deal on another 21".

If you do see the Nokia's for sale, the 445pro is flat AG screen (19.8" viewable) and the 445xpro is the Invar Shadow Mask (20" viewable). Both do 1600x1200 @ 85hz and I know mine goes to 1800x1440 @ 75hz

Spike,

While I prefer true-flat tubes (like the Sony FD Trinitron) I agree with you that a slightly curved CRT is fine. In fact, I would rather have a slightly curved CRT than a pseudo-flat tube.

Once again Wolfshanze... All technology based off of Sony's Trinitron (ie.Diamntron, Shadowmask) have the 2 Horizontal Damping wires
Once again LED, did you read your own link? Shadowmask do NOT have lines... only Aperture Grill (AG) monitors have them... Diamondtron is AG and has dampning wires, Shadowmask are NOT AG and do NOT have dampning wires.

Viewsonic makes both AG and Shadowmask monitors... those with AG technology have dampning wires (horizontal lines) those with Shadowmask technology do NOT have dampning wires.

Once again, if you do not want lines, go with Shadowmask... there are NO LINES on a Shadowmask.

Read the third Question on this link

Q Why there are two horizontal hairlines visible on the screen of aperture grille monitors like the Sony or Mitsubishi Diamondtron?

A There are two dampening wires that holds the aperture grille in place and these can appear on the screen as a distracting thin black or gray line. They are not a defect but many people decide they don't like the lines and buy a shadow mask monitor.

Better yet, check out this link.

CROMACLEAR VS. APERTURE GRILLE CRTs

Aperture grille CRT monitors currently use dampening wires to hold the black striping in place between the phosphors. Comparatively, CROMACLEAR CRTs utilize a shadow mask that does not require the use of dampening wires. Often, dampening wires are visible to the user and mechanically obstruct the flow of the electron beams, critical to maximizing image focus. Without dampening wires, the electron guns of a CROMACLEAR CRT hit the phosphors more consistently on all areas of the CRT.

In addition, dampening wires are highly sensitive and are more susceptible to shipping damage. They also have the potential to be affected by harmonic distortion when speakers are placed near the CRT.

Thanks for correcting me!

The guy said he wanted the monitor to play Half-life. I'm sitting in front of a Dell 19 inch Trinitron and those 2 lines are barely visible on a white screen, let alone when I'm playing Half-Life or any other game for that matter.

But thanks for the info...

No problem LED... there is definately a differance between AG and Shadowmask monitors.

I'm sitting in front of a Dell 19 inch Trinitron and those 2 lines are barely visible
I'm sitting in front of a Viewsonic 19 inch Shadowmask and there are no 2 lines visible at all.

Yes, Ultramags, the OP stated he wanted it for games, and YES, he won't notice the lines in Games unless he has an ultrasharp set of eyes... no matter how much a gamer the OP is, I doubt from the moment he turns on his computer to the moment he shuts it off, he'll be doing nothing but 24/7 gaming... for every moment he spends outside a game, he might run into those lines and decide he doesn't like them. Why are AG fans afraid of him knowing about those lines? I have repeatedly stated it is a personal preferance thing.

Let the OP make up his own mind if he wants lines on his screen or not. I merely was making him aware that AG monitors have lines on them, as I did not want him to be blindsided about them as I was when I purchased an AG monitor without prior knowledge. They stood out to me and my wife and we thought it was a defect.

What harm is there in informing the OP that AG has lines? If he doesn't care, then he doesn't care, but if it's an issue, he should be informed of the differance. A lot of people do care... if they didn't there wouldn't be any shadowmask monitors on the market.

For $150 you can get a high quality 19inch CRT. For $350 you could get a high quality 21inch. For your price range you should spend some more and get 21inch, the difference between the 19inch flat and ultra (or diamond bright) isn't worth it IMO. BTW I got an ultra budget 19inch KDS Xtreme flat for $99 from office depot ($150 - $50 MIR) which has this deal going quite alot. DOes 1600x1200@75hz which is great for gaming.

People are wondering why i hated my 997df. Well, i actually started out owning a 955df and it was bad because of this strange grain like moire effect when viewing certain colors. At the point when i returned that they no longer carried that line and only carried the 997df. So i came back with an exchanged 997df feeling satisfied.

Upon turning it on i thought "wow this is nice"... but that lasted for only about a week. After some use (at 1280x1024 @ 85hz) you can notice several vertical lines going down the left and right sides of the monitor. Theres also a very loud and strange buzzing noise that comes from the monitor when viewing imagse and pages that have high amounts of black and white together. THen lastly there is a serious streaking issue with colors. I have a white background and the title bars of my windows are blue. When i look closely enough i see a streak of blue running from the title bar all the way to the end of the screen.

I was thinking this was more than enough to warrant an rma. I got back a refurbished 997df (thats all they give), and this time it was just plain bad. It had a dinged up left side and colors all had a terrible green tint. The buzzing sound still occured, as well as the streaking. Of course the vertical lines were there as well.

I rma'd again and got another refurbished 997df. Upon boot up i noticed that this one displayed darker colors much better, but then (since i have dual monitor setup) noticed that it could not display as brightly as the first one i had. The buzzing sound was finally gone on this one, but the streaking and vertical lines still remained. I sort of gave up at this point... though i may just try another rma. These are consistent problems that have appeared on more than just the monitors that were given to me. I read up on some reviewes and comments and it seems the buzzing was the most common problem (vertical lines are just a part of the it). Anyway i dont like my 997df lol

Hmmm.... odd... I've had a 955DF for about two years, never had a complaint or problem with it... I got the Viewsonic G90fb because I wanted a black shadowmask monitor for my newer system.

Both monitors have been great... don't have a 997DF, but everyone says they are great monitors, and judging from my older 955DF, I could understand why.

I'm very happy with my Viewsonic G90fb... it's a great monitor (and no dampner lines!).

My wife is using the Viewsonic VP912b LCD and is very happy with it too... guess we haven't any monitor complaints on this end (last monitor complaint we had was those darn lines on an AG monitor we had purchased unwittingly).

before using the 997df i was on a 17" sony trinitron. those ag lines are something that ive grown very used to and do nothing to hinder the quality of the picture in my mind's eye. I loved my monitor, but it was destroyed during shipping (moving)

Ok... I thought about this and i dont want the sony Trinitron CRT because i don't wanna risk anything on a refurbished monitor. How is the Samsung 997DF? After I heard all of the problems that Reiniku had with his, it made me a bit skeptical about this one too. If neither of these two, then please give me a suggestion on what else to get. I would prefer a 19".
