need a good .22 rifle

I'm looking for something to have a little fun with... what are some good models and where can I buy one online?

I would go to Wal-Mart. If you're just plinking, a 10/22 is a good one. If you've never shot one before, a single shot break open style New England is cheap and fun. I started getting serious about 22 rifle, got myself a Springfield Model 1922 target from a friend. Its heavier than my 30.06. You can even get a .22 conversion kit for an AR-15. It all depends on what you want, and your description was rather vague. HTH

A Ruger bolt action .22 with iron sights may be the ticket. I have a target one of these in .22 magnum that has been one of my favorites.

a buddy has a Savage model 40 .22 varmint gun. he paid $400 but the thing is damn accurate.

i been thinking of picking one up myself.

No. The AR-15 standard NATO upper receiver uses a 5.56mm (.223) centerfire round. You can get a conversion kit that swaps out the bolt carrier of the standard receiver and an insert for the magazine to shoot .22LR out the same barrel. I've used it and it works great. These kits are military issue.

The AR-15 uses the 5.56x45mm round (also known as the .223) the cartridge is close to 3 inches long, and the propellant casing is 9mm ( .355in) in diameter.

usually. there are different forms of .22

there's long rifle which is the most common
there's short rifle, which is just a shorter version of the LR .22
and then there's .22 magnum which will only work with guns specified to use .22 magnum.
.22 long and short are not interchangeable with .22 magnum

ruger 10/22 is supposed to be a good gun. i have a Henry Golden Boy in .22LR. Its lever action and a very nice gun.

I have a "CZ" which is a Slovak gun, but it's actually very accurate and well finished. It was around 350 w/o sights (which actually looks better when your using a scope)

If you're looking at competitive shooting you should really look at something like a Remington 40-X or the like. Most smallbore shooting is done a 50 ft, and the 10 ring is about .22 in diameter, so accuracy in important. It's been a couple years since I shot a match, but realize that shooting requires a lot more equipment than just the gun. You're going to need a sling, coat, and mat at least if you want to shoot in competition. Also a good spotting scope important.

I bought a Ruger 10/22 from Academy Sports a year ago for less than $200. The only thing I added to the gun was a decent scope. There are enough aftermarket parts for the Ruger 10/22 to make just about anyone go broke. I'm happy with the accuracy of mine as it is, so I'm not going to start changing barrels and stocks.

I've found shooting the .22 at the shooting range to be rather boring. There just isn't enough power to keep me happy.

If you get really hardcore you can save the spent .22 brass to use for jackets in .223 bullets but making your own bullets is a bit of an acquired taste.

ruger 10/22 is the best and only 22 rifle worth buying IMHO. semi automatic, easy to clean and fairly inexpensive.

It may not drop someone to the floor, but if someone is getting hit by it they sure as well will feel it and most likely run away. Besides, enough holes should stop them eventually

51 holes of 22mm rounds would drop anyone

.22's (rimfire) are all just "plinker" guns. If you really want to get into target shooting with a rifle then .223 or .308 are the best rounds to start with imho. .223 round is very versatile and is readily available so unless your shooting at distances of 500+ yards I would stick with the .223. Not to mention the ammunition is much cheaper. (especially if your reload your own)

It breaks down and the entire rifle can be stored in the stock. Although if you had a scope you'd probably have to store that separately. It'd be a nice thing to take with you on hikes or even if you just wanted to store it at home hidden from plain view.
