Marlin used to be a good cheap 22. I have two that I picked up about 25 years back (I think at K-mart), they were around $50 and had a 20 shot magazine. The darn things were dead accurate, cheap, and lasted forever with a little care. (At least 25 years anyway).

Not to mention the ammunition is much cheaper. (especially if your reload your own)

Ok but how much more expensive are the .223s? What are some good ones? I looked but most have no front/rear sights. I plan on not using a scope so I need the sights.

I have a cheapo Savage 22 from Wal-Mart. Jams a lot, but it's accurate, and only cost around $100.

Get a Ruger.

+1

I have mine propped up behind my door with a couple of 'slightly larger' clips attached to it

Nice plinker but not a good home protection item.

It may not drop someone to the floor, but if someone is getting hit by it they sure as well will feel it and most likely run away. Besides, enough holes should stop them eventually

As long as they are not shooting back with a .45.

If you're looking at competitive shooting you should really look at something like a Remington 40-X or the like. Most smallbore shooting is done a 50 ft, and the 10 ring is about .22 in diameter, so accuracy in important. It's been a couple years since I shot a match, but realize that shooting requires a lot more equipment than just the gun. You're going to need a sling, coat, and mat at least if you want to shoot in competition. Also a good spotting scope important.

I've always liked Anschutz, Walther, or a good Winchester 52 for competitive. And the range starts at 50 feet and goes up to 100 yard for outdoor prone. If the OP wants to get into target shooting, I would say start with a .22. The ammunition is very affordable, and the lighter bullet causes greater emphasis on gauging the wind and heat than with high power (unless you're lucky enough for high power ranges that stretch back hundreds of yards).

A .223 rifle is going to cost twice as much as a Ruger 10/22. Here is a Savage .223 bolt action with open sights for $425. Expect to pay $600 for a Remington bolt action rifle.

Check your local paper for used guns. I bought a used Remington 700 in .270 caliber for $275 yesterday. The guy I bought the gun from said he only put one box of shells through it in the 15 years he has owned it. It's fairly common for used deer rifles to have very low round counts.

You can buy 550 rounds of .22 long rifle ammo for less than $12 at Wal-mart. .223 ammo is going to cost ten times as much as the .22 long rifle.
