i need to know what is the best way to do backups. Here is my situation and what i currently use.

I work at a Marketing Dept where there are between 150-200 gb of information that needs to be backed up. This figure could go up substantially in the next year or so, depending on our growth, but that is a whole different story.

I have a marketing server which i backup up to another server that i have. i also backup up to an external 160 GB hard drive which i take for off-site storage.

I hate to copy and paste all the folders from the marketing server over to my other two storage devices. I always have to be watching it to make sure i dont get "This file already exists, do you want to override it" question.

I want to avoid using tapes and i want to be able to automatically set it up so that everyday at a certain time all the files can be copied over to my backup server daily.

What is the best way to do this? Please recommend software, hardware, etc. This wouldnt be such a problem if I wasnt dealing with such huge amounts of data.

Any recommendations welcomed.

thanks

If you're using w2k or XP just use the built in backup program 'ntbackup' and set it to backup on a schedule to a file on the backup server.

You really should be using tape for something like this. An LTO tape drive would be ideal...especially LTO-2 since you'd be able to get everything on one tape.

We only have 100GB which we backup on a SuperDLT 110/220GB tape drive. Takes a little more than 5 hours. We just got a new file server six 146GB SCSI raid10 and we'll continue using SuperDLT until it maxes out then most likely get then next generation SDLT.

I'm afraid for this volume of data your best and cheapest option is tape. I was gonna say backup to external hardrives til you said its going to increase even more. You'd need to backup to some sort of tape library system using Standard or Super-DLT depending on your budget. You also need some sort of controller software to manage the library such as products from Dantz, Veritas or Tapeware.
