Need a good CPU fan for I7

I am building a very high end workstation for a rocket scientist friend of mine and had all the parts arrive from Newegg today. It is using a Core I7-3820. This is the first high end Intel system I have built in a while and to my surprise the CPU arrived without a fan which is a first for a boxed CPU in my experience. So I won't be assembling this until I get a fan. I looked at Neweggs site and this one struck my fancy. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835114120 Any thoughts from the experts on this or other recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is the first time Intel doesn't bundle a cooler, although they do offer one specifically for s2011 cpu's separately: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835203006

As you can see it's an all-in-one watercooler and it's quite expensive.

I wouldn't choose the Dynatron, it has a 92mm fan which will be noisy. The above recommended Coolermaster 212 is indeed very hard to beat for it's price. However, it might not be the quietest solution in case your friend does very cpu intensive tasks for prolonged periods of time.

Personally I would probably go for the Thermalright True Spirit 140: http://www.amazon.com/True-Spirit-14...s=thermalright

It's a bit more expensive but the fan is really good, pushing lots of air at very modest sound levels. It's also fairly slim so it doesn't block memory slots.

If you want the best of the best and money is no object there are 4 coolers which are basically equal performing, but these will block memory slots on s2011 boards:

Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E edition:
http://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-S...s=thermalright

Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 edition:

+1 this.

Do not buy cheap coolers your client will like a quiet computing environment. if you have to increase his bill for the high performance cooler I would do it and let him know. With the information you have given it sounds like this computer will be doing alot of work and will be under a good load most of the time.

I think a more important question is this: why are you building a workstation for a scientist, and then overclocking it? Isn't there a problem since he or she will be lacking round-the-clock support, not have a guarantee of rapid replacement should it break, and a chance of CPU miscalculations?

I'm not criticizing you as a builder, and I'm sure that your builds are all solid and require little maintainence beyond the norm for computers. However, I'm doubtful that you can provide immediate support and next-day fixes all the time, and I'm doubtful that you can guarantee that the CPU will always work perfectly after an overclock, regardless of the cooling.

Without the rebate, Kuhler 620 isn't really worth it. Air coolers like Hyper 212 Evo, Thermalright HR-02 Macho Rev. A (BW), Xigmatek Dark Knight II and Arctic Freezer i30 are better value

He stated nothing about overclocking....Just that the cpu doesn't come with a fan and he needs one.

Just get the EVO. You won't be disappointed. It will be quiet and you're only cooling a quad core at stock voltage so that's less heat than the 6 core chips normally found on 2011.

Just make sure the cooler you get has 2011 socket support.

The EVO wendy mentioned is solid and will allow you to 4Ghz and beyond. stock is 3.6Ghz... Its a great chip Im using it... On old Q6 cpu I would play this piano sound and go crazy on it hitting 20 keys at time, my CPU would choke and 100 percent and pop. So I got my 3 parts,,,, put mobo in and cup and ram and windows 8 booted right up.. no need to install stuff over again. Now those same 20 keys on the steinway piano and my CPU workload percentage is 2 percent and avg 3 percent CPU usage. What a amazing upgrade I did. That is 50x faster then a core 2 quad................ blew me away same way the SSD on a sata 2.0 at that time was best upgrade Ive ever done in my life.

+1 for the Hyper 212 EVO. It's a great cooler for the price.

Glad to hear this, because I just purchased one to go with my newly purchased 3820.
