I'm in the same boat, with the same requirements. I'd love to hear from some headset pro's too!

Check out the

Creative SB Tactic3D Alpha

or

Creative SB Tactic3D Sigma

Both have a THX TruStudio Pro Dual Mode USB-adapter which works like a second sound card.
So it makes use of THX TruStudio Soft/ Hardware and has THX TruStudio Pro Surround Sound.

The sound comming from this headset is overwhelming for gaming and the software makes it so fun to work with.
You have almost endless sound options and VoiceFX to change your voice with.

And do not forget the pricing as both should be available for under 100 dollar.

Here in Eu the Alpha goes for 50 euros and the Sigma goes for 70 euros.

So, I've narrowed it down a bit as too what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a "true" 5.1 or 7.1 surround headset. I rent a room so noise leakage might be an issue. I also have a large melon for a head. These headphones will be staying in my room always unless there's a fire.

My mobo comes with these audio specs. It can support 7.1 surround sound.
SupremeFX X-Fi built-in 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC
- EAX® Advanced™ HD 4.0
- X-Fi CMSS®-3D
- X-Fi Crystalizer™
- Creative ALchemy
- Supports Blu-ray audio layer content protection
- Supports 1 Optical S/PDIF out port at back I/O
- Supports 1 x S/PDIF out header
- Supports Jack-detection, Multi-streaming, Front Panel Jack-retasking

I'm debating between ROCCAT Kave and Psyko Carbon (If anyone has any experience with these please let me know what you think of them.)

I'm using these mostly for gaming but I would like to watch blu-ray movies on them. I honestly don't watch a lot of movies now because my speaker system is boxed away and all my movies sound like crap on my monitor speakers.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Headphones I've looked at and rejected.
Razor (anything) - Simulated 5.1/7.1
Corsair - Simulated 5.1/7.1
Logitech G(whatever) - Simulated 5.1/7.1
Tritton - made by MadCatz as I can tell. I hate Madcatz.

Thanks again.

I was in the same boat as you about a year and a half ago. Typically (and this is from my research a year ago) all the 5.1 headsets I checked out all emulated surround sound very poorly. I came to the conclusion that taking a nice pair of 2.0 cans with a GREAT sound stage any day over a pair of poorly designed "5.1" cans with a muddy sound stage.

What is your budget? I ended up having some more extra cash than I anticpiated so I decided to go a couple extra steps. I ended up first starting at the source and dumping my onboard audio for a real sound card: Asus Xonar Essense STX. This card has a headphone preamp built onto it. I then purchased a pair of Audio-technica ATH-AD700 cans. These are open air cans and are unbelievable in quality. Then if you need a mic, you can always buy a cheapie clip-on.

The Asus driver can emulate Dobly Headphone (surround sound) so I can switch it on and off for games. However, the sound stage on my Audio-technicas are amazing. Even in 2.0, I can hear things behind me.

You should really do some reading (and ask questions) over at Guru3d sound card forum. You will get some great info from those guys who can help you make a decision.

I just purchased the Roccat Kaves. I read countless reviews on them before purchasing. Everyone seems to agree they are the best 5.1 headset you can get.

At low price class, I'd just go with the most expensive Sennheiser headset I can afford. Senn has never disappointed me.

I want to recommend the Corsair Vengeance 1500 but I cannot find any reviews yet. Weird eh?

How can you recommend a headset you havent used yourself, or even found reviews on? I suggested the Kaves that I havent used, but i also read countless reviews before bringing it up.

Ive heard the Corsair headsets break after just a couple of months of non-rigorous use. The earcups snap off the headband or the wires fall apart inside the cable.

How do you feel about the logitech G35?

TBH, that was one of the first headsets i looked at. Ive been using a cheap $20 logitech headset for the last 4 years and never had any problems. I just figured since i was spending $2k on a new computer i might as well get a new headset.

I wanted the G35s just to stay logiteh, but again, after reading more than enough reviews, i was sadly turned from them. They are as fragile as the corsairs, there are only certain commands you can give the hotkeys, the software can dick up your computer beyond all belief.

Now given, this isnt how every single set of G35s will be, but enough people were having the same issues that i didnt want to risk it. After reading the Kave reviews, there was nothing else that came close to comparing.

I went with the Kave's based on a number of reviews as well. Not a big fan of USB, and wanted 5.1. I have them in my possession, but haven't really used them yet, as I just got my new system put together and running as of last night. I'll give some more feedback when I get a chance to put them to the test.

Cool buddy!

Yes, please give us the pros and cons of the Kaves.

Oh and are you satisfied with the cable length? Long enough?

Hope to see your review soon.

Thanks.

Ok, so I gave the Roccat Kave's a short test drive last night. Nothing too involved but I can give my initial impressions.

First things first, this is running on my new build, running Win 7. The only hardware specs that are really relevant in this case is the soundcard, which is an Audigy 2 ZS (yes, older card, this was a transplant from my old PC since I figured it would be better than onboard audio, and didn't feel like purchasing a new sound card).

Installation is intuitive enough, since there is no required software or drivers to install. There IS a USB cable, but it is for power purposes only. There are four audio jacks for Front/Surround/Sub/Mic. The only caveat here is to make sure you're plugging the right jack into the right port. Most sound cards have color coded ports so you should be fine, but I've read some reviews of people hooking them up wrong....but I give the members of this forum more credit.

I like the look. Simple functional design, all black color. I tend not like the feeling of hot smoke up my ass that other brands try to achieve with over the top designs. I'm at home, alone, immersed in a computer game....I have no need to be flashy. If you feel the need to catch the attention of every person at the lan-party, whether it's good attention or bad, these probably aren't for you.

They are heavy, which can be a pro and a con. I like something that feels hefty because it gives me the warm fuzzies that there may be some chance these were built well. On the other hand, I haven't worn them for 4 hours per sitting over the course of a few months to determine whether or not they cause cervical disc degeneration. In fact, I haven't worn them yet much past about 20 minutes. In that time however, the weight was more a "learning curve" than a problem....simply because I wasn't used to having something that heavy on my head, because my old $20 plantronics tended to float away in the breeze if my chassis fans kicked their RPMs up too high.

I found them to be, at first, very uncomfortable after a few minutes. Turns out, I just didn't have them positioned on my head in a manner best suited to comfort. After some adjustment, I found they were quite comfortable....for my fat head anyway. YMMV. Since they seemed to only want to be worn a certain way on my head, I hope this doesn't translate to completely unwearable for other craniums.

I took them for a sound test with just the audio demo that was on the included CD (which contains read me file, pdf manual, and a number of nice wallpaper images if you really feel like reppin Roccat). At first....I could barely hear a thing. Checked my system sound.......all the way up. Wondered if I had a defective unit until I remember the fancy little control module (which, by the way, you better have some desk space for since its got some heft to it as well....you wouldn't want it adding any more weigh to your head). I realized all the volume sliders were on low (separate sliders for front, center, surround, and sub). Started moving all the sliders up one by one and finally got sound! Unfortunately, only from the front channel. The other sliders did nothing. Again, worried I had a defective unit. Before going into full on rage mode, I checked my settings for my Audigy, and realized I only had stereo sound enabled. Switching to 5.1 surround fixed the problem.......duh.

Playing back through the Roccat audio demo, I was definitely much more impressed. You can really tell there is distinct and discreet positional audio with good transitioning. The bass was good but can get muddy at max volume with max bass setting....though I kinda expect this since I'm sorry, anything that will fit on your head is never gonna drive REAL bass (the kind I got used to from my dual 12" Kicker L7 solobarics running on 1000watts in my car). But, for a headset, I was impressed.

I am no audiophile, and my experience with headsets is limited to my old $20 set of Plantronics. But the sound quality was enough for my tastes. I am overall pleased with my purchase, but I will reserve my full judgement until I've had some in-game experience.

Very excellent KingLou.

Just from this short, fairly shallow (no offense) review, it seems as though I will have no regrets purchasing the Kaves.

I just hope i dont make your mistakes as I have a very short temper and may launch them like a frisbee before i troubleshoot lol.

Reading additional reviews online, I'm probably going to order the Medusa NX 5.1's to replace my old Medusas. Is it true that there's no actual driver for the subwoofer but they use some vibration thingy?

With a built in mic it is probably like the kaves, USB for power but seperate audio/mic cables

I will wait for the reviews and ask reviewers (youtube subscribers for example) to do a head to head comparison with the kaves.

The headset that comes out on top I am buying it no matter what the price

I won't build a new computer system until early next year, so I can afford to wait and let the dust settle so to speak.
