Drives needs to be of 1tb capacity minimum. System will be on 24/7. What's a better brand Seagate, Western Digital or other?

WD probably has the best drives in consumer space ATM. If this is a data drive (not boot drive) go for one of their Caviar Green drives, great pricing, slower rotation for less heat & theoretically longer lifespan.

There is no fool proof storage device, lots of people say XXX is better than YYY all the time.
I would just get whatever brand, and do backups if the data is important, since all HDs (and SSDs) will fail at some point.

Well, it's a year and a half later and I just got me a Zotac Zbox AD04 to use for a HTPC using WMC. I'm thinking an AV-GP WD drive since it's made for DVR stuff. Anybody know if these drives really do last any longer and are worththe extra money? It makes sense to me they would be, but I am not 100% certain.

Do not expect any hard drive to last.

Repeat that, over and over and over.

WD's AV drives are made for streaming. If they can't quickly correct an error, it's a bad block. So, they perform wear-leveling on the platter to help prevent the need for time-consuming error recovery in the first place. In turn, that should also help keep stale data alive. In addition, their firmware is performance-optimized for constant low/mid-bandwidth writing, as opposed to the typical desktop, mobile, or server case of periodic bursts.

They are good drives to get for that purpose, but if you want reliability, you need to add redundancy.

Thanks. I know no hard drive last all that long, and DVR drives have much more stress put on them due to constant writing and reading. Heck, even SSD's die. Short of building a cheap NAS or buying one I am limited to the internal drive bay (2.5" only) and 1 external SATA. I suppose I could also do a USB 3.0 drive, but that doesn't help. I don't know of a cheap NAS that would give me redundancy and be worth the price for primarily storing recordings. If anybody does I am all ears. Of course I'd also like to keep the electricity usage down if possible, that's why I ordered this nettop box.
