The wife and I took a private lesson the other night and spent a short while on the range firing a Glock 9. My wife, who is quite slight was having a hard time working the slide and I am wondering if anyone out there knows of a good gun that would be useable by both of us. I was thinking of the Ruger SR9 which is (according to the instructor) very glock like except that it is a very thin gun. I figure this difference will make it easier for her to handle.

any other thoughts?

Apart from the odd trip to the range, the gun will spend its time in a lock box in the bedroom in case someone tries to break in.

Oh, and TTIWWP

If you are looking for something for basic home defense and/or target shooting, I would recommend a Beretta 92FS. It is a full sized pistol, easy to work with, and is a dream to shoot.

.38 revolver. Your wife wont have to worry about using her puny arms; all she has to do is pull the trigger. Everyone knows this.

to be even more specific. The instructor had us doing a drill whereby we were yanking back the slide while lifting the slide stop with our thumb to lock it in the open position. lifting the slide-stop is what she had a hard time with. Something a little smaller would make a difference as would a lot more practice...

Hmm, after careful consideration I think you would both benefit from purchasing one of these:

Agreed. For your wife get her a revolver. For yourself I would recommend a Glock 40. I love my G22. It doesn't have much more kick but has a good bit more stopping power.

What purpose: range, home defense, concealed carry?

If you're looking for some top notch reviews, check out nutnfancy: http://www.youtube.com/user/nutnfancy. Go to his playlist "Handguns Reviewed"

He's pretty much reviewed them all including Sig P226, P238, Glock 17, Glock 26, Ruger SR9, various 1911s, Keltec PF9, Kahr PM9, H&K USP C, Springfield XD9, FNP 9, S&W M&P 9, Walther P22.

To get an idea of what is too large, were you using a Glock 17 at the range? It's the fullsize Glock 9mm. A more compact version is the Glock 19. The subcompact version is the Glock 26.

Basically need more information to determine form factor and caliber, auto or revolver, etc.

oh. the barrel looked round to me at first glance.

i sees it now. that's actually a pretty sweet little piece.

edit- although that looks like a reproduction. way too 'new' to be cool.

Yeah, what you want is a revolver. If if jams she just pulls the trigger and it will fire, plus no slides to worry about. You might want a semi-auto for the capacity, but if she is not capable of stopping a home threat with 6 rounds then you will be needing something more like the canon pictured above

A lightweight small frame 38 DAO is all a woman needs to make bad guy very dead. Something like a S&W 642 is my rec.

I suggest the Shrouded hammer version shown so it does not catch on items when pulling nor is their confusion.

S&W .38 revolver loaded with +P's. No slide to fiddle with. never a doubt about loading/unloading.

A Glock 17 or 19. Keep a round chambered and she won't have to cycle the slide.

Glocks are very simple, easy to learn handguns for beginners and they fire consistently.
