You use what you feel most comfortable with. What you are most proficient with. If you are like me and you spend the majority of your time on the pistol range because its down the street, then you pick up the pistol when you hear strange noises coming from your front door at 2am.

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "detailed" weapon? I have not heard that term used before.

I don't know your weapon background....this is how someone can take out their Clint Eastwood long gun to solve discussion.

i don't know posts like this make it sound you don't know really, but somehow do know.

if you are hunting down a noise why just bring the pistols?

I never get this. Hunt it with a rifle/shotgun, then switch to a more 'detailed' weapon if needed.

Most do not follow comprehensive security though....they just pick out weapons instead of defense.

It's simple, the pistol is less menacing to my neighbors and logic tells me the most likely senario is not a guy robbing my lawn mower in the middle of winter, but perhaps some teenagers screwing around.

Do you think my next door neighbor would think I'm sane if I startled his little girl trying to recover a Frisbee in my yard with a 12 gauge, or a pistol nicely hidden in it's holster/ placed in a pocket.

There is prepared, then their is paranoid. I refuse to run upstairs and load a shotgun every single time I hear a noise in my yard. I don't live in the ghetto after all.

Now if I hear glass shatter in the middle of the night, I'm going to grab my pistol, head to my shotgun and then investigate while my wife calls 911.

Besides, if you can't kill it with a 357, it probably doesn't need killing.

I'm not sure what you are saying but I will clarify my statement anyway. I know several people who choose to keep a sidearm for HD despite owning long guns. The reason is that they are proficient with their sidearms and while familiar with their long guns their muscle memory and training is with their sidearm.

how so? Why not stop acting like a child?

His story makes no sense regardless. Knew it was nothing yet still was packing and having his wife watch his back.

He's either a coward or painting stories.

If I had both a rifle/shotgun and a pistol, I'd go out 'looking' for something with the former. If someone broke into my home or I was carrying for protection out and about the latter.

Did you listen in your CCW classes at all? One of the MOST important points they drive home is that CCW is NOT to be used to protect others. It is strictly ONLY for SELF defense.

Depends where you live. Some states it is perfectly legal to use deadly force in stopping a forcible felony.

S.C. has the "alter ego" law. If I'm in the quick shop and a robber points a gun at the cashier, I can "assume" her place and put one in the guy. Even in the back, no warning. I am not required to defend her though. Only my child, by law.

Hrmm, that's odd. In OK, you can only use your weapon if the threat is directed at you. In a situation like that you could say "hey asshole!" and plink him as he starts to train his gun on you

My instructor(a cop) said he would not give the guy a heads up. Not busting on OK because I don't believe I have ever been there but this is S.C. We have been accused of being less progressive/educated than the rest of the country. Suits me if the bad guy gets capped in the chest, back, head, groin....

ok, let me make a comment....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Wait, whew..........ok....HAHA...Almost done....

Ok

Maybe my wife was watching out the window because she...WANTED TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL WAS MAKING THE NOISE AS WELL?

Again, I'm not going to run upstairs and get a shotgun or AK just to go see what was making a noise in my backyard. I do however usually have a pistol on or near me so I took that with. (I come home, take my gun off and basically carry it room to room with me until I head upstairs where the safe is located). Had my pistol not be on the table next to me, i would of went to look unarmed (gasp!) I said I felt safer knowing I had my pistol, not that I felt in danger if I didn't have it.

Again, there is prepared and there is paranoid. Why stop with loading up my AK to check out a noise outside, maybe I should call my friends, they can come over, we can spec out in tactical gear with custom optics on our AR rifles and head down to the shed, then I could breach the door and throw in a flashbang, my friends would then enter in 2 by 2 securing the 8x10 shed in quick fashion.

Now that is safe!

Yes because a gun can't go off unless someone makes it go off. A dog however can get spooked and kill your baby. Not to mention a lot of people "train" their gaurd dogs and keep them aggressive by limiting food. It's been proven (Mythbusters) that you can distract a well trained gaurd dog with food.
http://videos.howstuffworks.com/discovery/30312-mythbusters-guard-dog-steak-video.htm

Oh, and what do you do when a guy is asaulting you or your wife and your dog jumps in and starts attacking you. Because that happens as well. When a dog gets riled up and is in super aggressive mode, it can attack anyone, including you. Dog = Animal = can make mistakes.
Gun = inanimate object that can't do anything with out an outside force acting on it. Or is their a model of gun I'm unaware of that has legs and walks around shooting the innocent children of the world?

Dude this might be the stupidest argument one can use. For every dog mauling I bet there is at least 10-15K accidental shootings. Its like comparing a spoon to a hatchet. This is a fact, most people don't nor should they own a gun. You pass a drivers test you get a license, but there are millions who should not be driving. I never argue the right to own a gun, just the reason and purpose behind it. And as I have said repeatedly on the subject, reading some of the stupid posts highlights why I think that way. I grew up in a family where from my father to uncles to grandpop had guns out the wazoo. My grandpop had an arsenal and I do mean arsenal. His favortite was his nickle plated.45 with pearl handle. I just read some of these posts and quite frankly some of these douche bags should be totally disqualified from owning a gun.

.38 revolver if you don't have small children , If you do I would get the best alarm system monitored and any type of semi auto with the ammo within reach, but not in the gun. Same with a shotgun . Kids get into so much shit .

I did a quick non-scientific, non-comprehensive search on Google. About 1100 deaths by accidental shooting per year and about 18 by dog bite per year in the USA. Thats a 61 to 1 ratio of guns to dogs. There is a 39 to 1 ratio of car crash deaths when compared to accidental discharge of firearms going by some more oft repeated but unverified statistics I found on the net. Off topic, but interesting.

It's a hard call, but IMHO teach the kids about the guns, show their friends (get permission though)..once they know they can shoot they probably won't be stealing it.

As I approach 40 I am thinking maybe it's time to have a gun in my house. In the past my mitts were good enough.

As a kid I did fucked up things, but I never ever really crossed the lessons my dad taught me.
