Need a hard drive ASAP!

After being f-ed by Seagate and their horrendous AAK firmware, I need to buy another hard drive asap since it has put a hold on building my rig. I'm looking for a speedy hard drive that's pretty quiet; space is secondary compared to speed/noise. I've been considering the WD Raptor 150GB ADFD and the Samsung T 501LJ (but a bit concerned about the drive's vibrating issue). Any other suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

(Please, NO Seagate suggestions - They used to be my #1 choice for hdd's, but after this bs, I'll never buy another product from them again).

Oh yeah, forgot to mention I was looking at this drive too. Thanks for the suggestion anyway though!

hclarkjr, how is the WD in terms of noise and performance? It seems like you have one of them based on your sig.

And btw, only looking for a SATA drive if anyone else wants to suggest a drive.

I'd go with the WD or the samsung 500gb t166 spinpoint. The latter is the quietest and coolest running though.

Do you have feedback with the vibrating with the t166?

Feedback ? I think I saw someone post about it vibrating some time ago, but that was a stand-alone issue ? My own samsung HD does not vibrate, in a antec p182. Where did you get your info from, about the samsung vibrating ? I think all HD's vibrate btw, but if you mount them using silicon grommets it should be just fine.

i have an AKSS and RE2 drive in my system right now and am very happy with them. if you can get an RE2 they have 5 year warranties on them. newegg is no longer selling them though which is where i bought mine.

ilbabimac, just curios: "After being f-ed by Seagate and their horrendous AAK firmware".

In what way it affects your computing experience?

I'm curious... what's your deal with seagate? they work better than any WD's I've owned, and I used to be WD fanboy

You can find out more about the problems here.

I'm not talking about ALL Seagate drives, just the ones with the AAK firmware that CANNOT be flashed (at least for the 320GB one).
But the way Seagate has decided to go about it is what made me not want to purchase from them again. I was expecting a certain item, but instead, I got screwed over and they still haven't addressed the public about the slow down in performance with the AAK firmware. On top of that, I wanted to get the product I THOUGHT I was buying so I called Seagate about it. They said that I need to pay for return shipping to Seagate for them to send me a REFURBISHED drive that might have the same, bad firmware... No thanks.

I read about it in different forums and user reviews. But yeah, the grommets seem to solve that issue. Where can I get some silicone grommets?

I forgot to mention that I'll be doing a fair share of gaming too so in that case, the WD AAKS would be the better choice over the Samsung right?

I doubt there will be any difference in load times between the WD and the Samsung, let alone in gaming performance.

You'd need to have the absolute best graphics card and CPU and 4GB of RAM to notice any kind of difference in those hard drives at that level; they're not unevenly bottlenecking anything.

Cool, thanks for the feedback.

Samsung has a 1 year warranty and WD had 3 years right?

I went with the WD7500AAKS for mine. So far it is very quiet. I didn't need 750gb, but for the price and the speed I went for it.

Now that I think about it, isn't 500GB a little too much for a primary drive? Or at least for me anyway. I have a 320GB storage drive and that's been plenty so far, so maybe I should just get a 250gb-320gb drive? Something like this or this?

Forgot to mention the newer 320GB single platter Caviars from WD. That's what I'm considering most at the moment.

I think it will depend on what Samsung drive you get. Some do have a 3 year warranty.

For Example

Maybe it's inaccurate information, but NewEgg shows this drive to have a 3 year warranty.
