Hey all
I just got done re-building my computer.
I'm running an i7 4770k with an AMD 7950 that I've re-used from my older rig.
Waiting for some aftermarket r290s. However, I'm starting to question if I got a big enough psu.
Running a Corsair Professional Series HX 750 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Gold

I'm starting to hear that you want 800-850watts for the r280-290s :|
Any truth to this? Figured you guys would know

If it turns out I'm too close on minimal power requirements, I may go with an Nvidia 780 I guess.

The 290X has an official TDP of 250W. Let's say no more than 300W in reality, so you should be fine with a single card.

You should be fine with a single 290 unless you have a whole bunch of HDDs and external devices hanging off your PC.

My i5 2500K (@4.3GHZ) and HIS R9 290 (Arctic Accelero Xtreme) have been running just fine using my 700W Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold.

Cool.
Ill be running one WD raptor drive, one optical drive and three 120mm case fans.
Should still be fine?
Oh also the 4770k is on an asus maximus hero VI. Which ive read is a little power hungry compared to other z87 mobos

In addition to an ASUS P8P67 (16GB RAM), I have an SSD, HDD, optical drive, discrete sound card, a Zalman fan controller and 5 x 120 mm fans all drawing power from my 700W PSU.

TLR version - I don't think you'll have the slightest problem feeding a single 290 (even if you over clock the bejesus out of it) with your setup.

WD raptor drive

5 watts

one optical drive

max. 5-10 watts, a couple watts when idling

and three 120mm case fans.

A couple watts each

Oh also the 4770k is on an asus maximus hero VI. Which ive read is a little power hungry compared to other z87 mobos

Is it? Maybe a little. If there's a difference, it's going to be a 10-20W or so at most.

It should be safe to run 290 Crossfire at stock volts on a quality 750W unit.

there are many psu calculaters online i found the one from thermaltake to be the best. just put in your system and it will tell you what you need. I put in my future system and bought one for the future system i will put together as funding provides itself.

My old and cheap Cooler Master 620W psu died after 10mins after installing my 290 (while playing Sleeping Dogs). I thought it would be good enough to run my system incl the 290...I was wrong..

When running a card like the 290 (ie powerhungry) the quality of the psu is very important, I would say more important than max watts.
I increased my budget for a good quality psu (Cooler Master V700) to be as certain as possible my system doesn't die on me again and have a little spare power in case of oc'ing.

Running a fx-8350 and R9 290 (both stock).

Out of curiosity, which Cooler Master unit was that? They have a Silent Pro M2 620W, a Thunder M 620W and a Real Power M 620W. All of them manufactured by a different OEM.

It was about 4 years old.

Then it wasn't the Silent Pro which is the best one out of those three, and the newest. And since it died I would guess it was the Real Power M made by AcBel and with only 516W on the +12V, instead of the more powerful Thunder M made by CWT.
