Need a little ASPI help

I d/l CDR-Identifier but it says it can't run bc the 'ASPI is outdated or not present'. Then I ran ASPI32.exe from Adaptec. But it says it won't run bc there's nothing valid to update or something like that. Any ideas? I've burned a few CDRs adn -RWs with the plextor 1210 the past few days. Win98 firsted.

You need an adaptec product (either ez cd creator, or a piece of hardware) to use adaptec's aspi update program. However, there is a hack out there that lets you install it without having any adaptec products. Many other people have had this problem too, just do a search on your favorite engine.

ok, my plextor came bundled with "Adaptec® Easy CD Creator? and DirectCD? for Windows? software". I haven't installed anything other than the trial versoins of Nero and CloneCD and updated the firmware to 1.05.

I thought I've read that Nero clashes with EZ-CD. Is that true? Should I install EZ-CD and DirectCD and Plextor Manager (which may or may not be compatible with Clone) and then update the ASPI?

What is the best way to do this? Mucho gracias!

I run all of those programs and I don't have any problems with any of them. You also might want to get ASPI check. It'll tell you whats going on with your ASPI. BTW Windows ASPI is pretty lame, don't use it.

I have aspi check- winaspi32.dll is Version 1(1). from 1998. I guess that's the problem.. version 4+ is out..

Get the 4.60(1021), the ForceASPI will install them if the aspi32_460_1021.exe doesn't.

I don't know. I'm not an expert but i've been told that with regards to ASPI, if it ain't broke -don't fix it or don't break it.

I have the suspicion that the "outdated" ASPI drivers that Nero et al uses are optimized just fine for those programs and updating your ASPI might cause some troubles. I did the ForceASPI thing and haven't had any problems although i've heard anecdotal stories that it's played funny things with other people's systems.

I would just chuck CD Identifier away since there are a multitude of other programs that will do the same job and without you going the extra mile to update your ASPI.

However, if you do use ForceASPI then don't forget that you also have an "undo" option to reset your old ASPI layer.

I use ForceASPI 1.17 with no probs .. w/ Plex 8X CD-R.

Dear god, do not use the plextor software. When I put it on my Win98SE machine, it seriously messed it up. Nothing safe mode, uninstall, repair registry, find hidden crap related files to delete, pray to software god, pray to hardware god, another safe mode, you get the idea.......didnt fix though!! However, I have a feeling it could very well be the short between the keybaord and chair, if ya know what I mean
