I have a Dell 2001FP monitor. It has worked great for a while now and then all of a sudden... When i turn it on it works fine for about 3 mins then it gets a burning smell and the screen goes black.. The lights on monitor are still on. I can turn it off for a few mins then back on and it does the same thing? Is this something i can fix or does anyone know of places that fix this kinda thing?

Thanks for any help with this!

You, or someone else is gonna have to crack it open and look inside.

My bet would be electrolytic capacitors have gone bad and need to be replaced.

Any kind of burning smell coupled with the device not working means its dead. If its inside the warenty period then use it. Otherwise just find a replacement for it.

I don't see a service manual available.

Post a pic of the backside.

Here's what I can find about getting the thing apart:

getting the case off
If the monitor is lying flat (with the screen pointing upwards) then have a look at the sides - there are some small flat-screwdriver-sized gaps at regular intervals between the black plastic rim (mine's a black monitor) and the grey trimming. You need to prise that open carefully.

Also, if opening it up, it's important for me to say the usual disclaimer: I accept no responsibility for your actions!

And don't attempt to do this if your warranty is still valid!

per request, I've uploaded the photos I took whilst dismantling the monitor:

Is that the only board?
Does this use and external power supply?

Yeah, the glue is 'normal'.

There is another board for the i/o(the one with the glue on it). Yes, the monitor uses an external power supply on the cord. Also it has the flimsy piece like you posted.

i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww329/capler/STEP3-DSC04700-1.jpg <----------- same as this.

I really do appreciate your help in this matter KGB.

Tony,

I don't see the circled areas you mentioned.
I also don't see any indications of blown caps.
Do you have a multimeter?
If so, measure the outputs of your external power supply.

No problem on the help. I used to be very active in this part of the forums but not so much lately.

Frankly, most posters here are ready to just trash their stuff rather than fix it which is quite sad. This place used to be about identifying problems and fixing them, ... not just swapping components.

So, ... thanks for keeping my interest level up.

I will take some closer shots tomorrow. There are a few spots burnt on the board.. Also on top of some of the caps there is some burn also. I am glad someone is still interested in this stuff. I always say if you don't learn to fix it yourself then you have to pay someone or buy new! This is the first LCD i pulled apart and it's kinda cool and sparks some interest. Unfortunatly i couldn't even get it open without your help so.. Thanks and i'll post those shot tomorrow.

BTW,

I noticed in your sig that you have an X-Fi xTreme Music card. Have you done the op-amp mod to it?

Sorry about that KGB.. i have been on the go so much lately that i forgot about this project lol... I just won a LCD inverter for this monitor from the bay for cheap. I think it's the issue as it has the burn spots on it so gonna give it a try. As for the Xtreme music sound card, i have heard of this op-amp mod but never looked into it.. Will it make that big of a difference and how hard is it to do. i have 3 xtreme musics and 1 xtreme gamer all running in the house so it wouldn't be a bad idea if it's not too hard to do.

Again sorry for the delay just been busy and surfing from my cell mostly.

Let us know how the inverter swap goes.

Regarding the X-Fi mod, definitely do it. The Xtreme Music was a real sleeper: $50 card with $10 in mods sounds better than it deserves to.

Here is a link

Just do the op-amp(s) and the filter cap. The other shit isn't worthwhile.
If you just listen to 2 channel stuff replace only the main op-amp. The others are for surround channels.
