Need a new game

So I got myself a new gaming rig, and I need to do some gaming. And I'd love to play online. The last time I was really, heavily into online PC gaming, I was playing multiplayer Return to Castle Wolfenstein. God, I loved that game. The multiplayer was so well balanced and was designed in such a way that it really pushed even complete strangers to work together as a team.

Here's what I loved about it:

1) The weapons were basic, and class-dependent. There was no "whoever gets the better gun/vehicle/power-up first wins." The best all-around gun was the basic submachine gun that every class had (the Thompson or the MP32). The Soldier class had access to more powerful weapons, but they were all only useful in very specific situations (ie, use the flame-thrower to hold a hall-way, use the rocket-launcher to take out a gunner, use the minigun to lay suppressing fire). None of the weapons was all out "better" than any other.

2) The classes fit together perfectly, and heavily encouraged teamwork. A pair of one medic (healing and reviving) and one lieutenant (supplying ammo) working together would beat a pair of two soldier-class players any day of the week, since their class abilities complimented each other and would keep them in the fight much longer.

3) The respawns came in waves. Every thirty seconds or so, everyone who died would spawn together, which meant that all of the respawning players would be in the same place at the same time. No running around the map looking for your team-mates. You have a ready-made squad as soon as you hit the ground. This also makes it much easier to learn the map as a new player. Just follow the veterans who spawned with you.

Obviously with any online, team-based shooter you'll be able to get great teamwork if you play regularly with the same people, like in a clan or with a group of friends. But with RTCW, I found that I would get great team interaction more often than not, even when I was thrown into a server with total strangers.

Anybody know of any current game that comes even close to this sort of experience?

SplashDamage was charged with creating an expansion pack, called Enemy Territory. For whatever reasons, id and company made it freely available to the public, and it has quite the following. But what you'll see is more-or-less similar to RTCW.

Quake Wars is on the horizon, and promises to deliver the same kind of feel in the Quake setting.

Counterstrike Sorce is fun so if Day Of Defeat Source you can but them together for like $20 I think.

I liked RTCW a lot, but did not like ET at all. I second the CS: Source & DOD: Source recommendations. I would also look at COD2.

One caveat with CS though is you have to wait to spawn until the end of the round if you happen to die earlier in the round. Some people find this really annoying, but I actually don't mind at all, particularly if I can fly around and watch everyone else kill themselves until the round is over.

he would probably like TF2 when it comes out

although its a pretty crappy game, BF2 and its ilk might be up your alley also.

I tried ET briefly about two years ago and was put off by all of the added classes. There was something elegant about the four simple classes in RTCW. I was having some connection problems, and didn't have as much time for gaming in general at the time, though, so I didn't really give the game much of a chance. It's possible that once I got over the learning curve of figuring out how and when all of the classes were meant to be used, I'd like it better. But at this point that game must be at least, what, four years old? Do people still play it?

I've tried getting into CS a few times in the past, but to no avail. Most of the people I run into in CS have been playing it for years. I simply couldn't get over the learning curve. Or at least couldn't have any fun getting my ass handed to me over and over while I tried to get over the learning curve.

I'll look into DOD and COD2, though.

I've had a couple of fun moments playing the Battlefield games, but generally I find the maps to be too big and too vehicle-dependant. I spend more time trying to find the fight than I do actually fighting.

QFT, this pretty much sums up my BF2 experience as well.

I'm with you. I loved Wolf: ET. I just can't get myself to play it that much anymore.

Supposedly there's a RTCW2 coming out.

That would be fantastic. I did a quick Google search for RTCW2, though, and the most recent mention of it I could find was from late 2005. Have you heard anything new about it? Was it canned?

You could try COD. No classes, but it's similar gameplay but more intense IMO. I believe the latest is COD3, but I haven't played it, only the first 2.

RTCW2

http://www.rtcw.jolt.co.uk/content/faq/rtcw2faq.html
Q: is there really a RTCW 2 coming?
A: A new Wolfenstein game was officially announced on 5th October 2005.

Q: Is it really RTCW 2?
A: It's "the next chapter in the Wolfenstein universe", apparently. RTCW fans are generally taking this to mean a proper sequel to RTCW, and generally eliminating Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory from the equation. The whole RTCw to Enemy Territory thing is a little complicated, and it is known for certain that "Enemy Territory" is now being considered a new line of games by id Software and Activision (Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for example has been stated to "have nothing to do with Wolf" by id, and ET-QW is based in the Quake universe).

Q: Who is making RTCW 2?
A: As with RTCW, and as originally intended for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, there are seperate developers for the single and multiplayer sides of the game.

Raven (who also developed, amongst others: Quake 4, Jedi Knight II, SoF 2 and Hexen) are developing the singleplayer game.

The multiplayer is being made by Nerve (who also developed, amongst others: RTCW MP, RTCW for Xbox, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil).

id Software is again "executive producer", while Activision is the publisher.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_to_Castle_Wolfenstein
In July 2004, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead briefly mentioned that a sequel to Wolfenstein was in development saying "Return to Castle Wolfenstein... basically the sequel to that is a project that's already under works at another studio". It has been confirmed that this statement was not referring to Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, which was the general assumption when ET-QW was announced. It is likely that it will be developed using Doom 3 technology. There have been a couple of news articles about RTCW2 discoveries, including an email received from Todd Hollenshead which can be viewed at http://www.rtcw2.com.

On October 5th, 2005 id Software and Activision announced that this game, it is a joint production between id Software and Raven Software. The announcement can be viewed here http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=175541

http://www.rtcw2.de/
Unofficial site ... nothing but *flash* no details.

imo, the longer they take, the better ... with so MANY new *buggy* games being foisted on us, it would be nice to have a new game that is actually OUT of Beta upon release

i am tired of being an UN-Paid beta tester for greedy publishers [atari]

ET destroyed most of what made RtCW multiplayer so great IMO. OP pointed it out, you had to rely on your teammates and no one was overpowered. ET threw that out the window with stuff like ammo racks and the XP system. Hell, it even introduced a whole new class that was pretty much made for lone wolfing. It wasn't a horrible game at all, but it lacks that polish and heavy team focus of RtCW.

DoD:S might be a good game to try, it has a class system but its not really the same as the arcadish one RtCW had. There's no health or ammo guys, but you do need teamwork to hold most areas. While I play CS:S a lot, there's barely any teamwork to speak of in most pub games. The most teamwork I ever see it letting a n00b take a bullet so you can tell whether the next room is clear or not.

I don't really have any ideas unfortunately, I played RtCW almost exclusively for a year and a half and then sporadically for another six months. I loved that game and haven't really found anything that addicted me quite like it.

I was a RTCW addict as well. I am thinking about reinstalling it. Is their anyone left playing it these days? Or are the servers empty?

Resurrecting this thread because im interested in this RTCW2 and such...

Do people still play RTCW online? What about RTCW:ET?

Are there still a lot of active people playing? And is it a PITA to DL all the patches and add-ons?

Yeah, lots of people still play it. I was playing actively till last September and it was still thriving. The only really annoying part was the panzers and artillery spam. Unfortunately, the program seems to crash my comp for some reason so I can't play anymore

Battlefield 2142. Great game. I mean, if you joi a clan that is. Without one, it gets kind of annoying to see (insert something) Whores etc..

But with a good team, it can be a incredible experience. Added to that is the ability to spawn on any transport or vehicle or squad, and so you will probably be always next to someone.
