Need a new Mattress - opinions?

I did a search and came up with some threads about this - but no one answered them. I'm looking for a new mattress and things are just getting confusing. The same mattresses have different names at different places and it's hard to get a handle on what's comparable. Looking online, the only place with reviews seems to be epinions, but even there it's very unorganized.

I've looked at a couple places so far, sleep train and mattress discounters. It seems like it's pretty easy to haggle with the salesguys, but the problem is that I don't know what a good price is!

I've been leaning towards a simmons beautyrest carmel pillowtop (?) but it's gotten bad reviews (on epinions) - can anyone suggest anything else?

buying mattress is like buying tv... go to local store and check it out in person.

They usually have really big sales for every minor holiday, at least around me (Chicago burbs)...

I seem to remember President's day being a ridiculous sale, something like 60% off....

EDIT: I mean the local B&M Stores (mattress giant, american mattress, etc....)

We went to Sears to pick ours up-- sat and laid on lots of mattresses, and ended up going with some generic brand for a lot less money. It's a nice mattress.

Isn't sleepnumber just an air mattress? After using an air mattress in college, I do not want to go back!

I have a sealy pillow top (sorry, dont know the exact name as I'm at work) but I've had it for about 3 years now is still sleeps the same since I've got it. What I do know is my roomate went with a generic brand and after about a year, it had an indention where he slept in it. Dont know much about the sleep # beds, but I've moved them before and they're really light and easy to move lol.

Markup on mattresses is insane. List price can be as high as 4-5x what the store actually paid for it.

All I can say is don't cheap out ... that doesn't mean you have to spend a ton of cash, get one discounted, but don't buy a crappier bed because it'll save you $100. I finally bought a nice bed the last go-round, and it is still brilliant 8 years later.

Wait for a sale. I waited for Boxing day and bought a really nice $2,399 mattress for $999

Honestly though, a good mattress is worth the money. Think about it, you sleep on it every night, and it will probably last 10-15 years.

Yes but it has better control than a regular air mattress. I suggest in your shopping that you at least go to a sleepnumber store to check them out.

Thanks for all the replies. I know a lot of people are saying that the generic brands have indentions, but that's what I've been reading about Simmons mattresses... anyone have any experiences with them?

I've had a Serta that I got from Sam's Club for a year now. I ended up getting it 50% off their price which was around ~$600 for a King.

Check out Sam's or Costco. The Serta mattress/box springs I got are very comfortable and come with the same 10 year warranty they offer on the more expensive beds they sell. Basically, it's still really good quality but about half-price from most other distributors/stores. Some of them offer Sealy mattresses, instead of Serta.

P.S. - I recommend getting a firm mattress without a pillow-topper...then adding a featherbed on top of that. The only problem with mine is that when I go to sleep, I don't want to wake up.

Funny...there was a piece on 60min or 20/20 awhile back. The mattresses intentionally have many different names at different places so that you can't compare store-to-store. We had good luck at a trusted local furniture store buying a name brand mattress for our daughter's bed.

The wife and I still have a Select Comfort mattress from about 12 years ago. Very expensive; marginally worth it overall. The air mattress inserts seem to be well-made and have lasted a long time, but the overall construction seems a bit cheap. We also found 2 big problems unless you pump both sides up to a high level of firmness, 1) sitting down on one end of the bed with another person at the other end results in a pretty good "bounce" for the already-seated person, and 2) if one person prefers firm and the other prefers softer, you end up rolling up/down from one side to the other if you want to snuggle close.

Sears is having a 50% off sale the 17th-20th. I have no idea what I'm getting into. I have a brand new twin sized mattress now that sits on a wood frame, so there's no box spring. I'm looking to pick up at least a queen size mattress. I guess I have to buy a box spring with it too? How do I know what a comfy bed is? I've never layed on a mattress that WASN'T comfy.
