Need a new router

I have a wireless netgear router. It's a couple years old, and I think it's time to get a new one. What are the good brands these days? Any model in particular worth looking at? Nothing too expensive, only 2-3 computers are on the network, gigabit not necessary. Very little communication between computers, so speed between them doesn't matter.

Actually Jack, I don't need wireless at all. The one computer that was using wireless has since switched to wired. We had too many issues with the wireless NIC it had and it was just easier to drill a hole through the wall that seperated the computers. Since there are no computers anywhere else in the house, future need of wireless is also unnecessary at this time. Nobody here has a laptop nor will have one anytime soon either.

Then it makes No sense to spend even a penny on a New Router.

Actually, they do not even make newly designed wired routers, unless it is some thing with very specific capacities, and those are expensive.

The reason I bring this up is because I've been having some issues with my current router. Since it's old and outdated, I figured I'd just replace it. I don't need a camera on my phone either, but they all come with one now. I'm just saying it's an unimportant feature to me and holds no basis on my purchasing decision. I just want something stable, with good throughput, an easy to use admin panel, and no worries.

Then logic dictated that you would post the nature of the trouble, and someone might be helping you.

Read your original post it only indicates that you want to buy new because the current one is old and it is time to get a new one.

I don't have a printer, so again this is a feature that means nothing to me.

Get a Cisco router and learn something!

I don't know how getting Cisco would teach me anything.

That is untrue. Logically, I should have zero reason to post why I want a new router, as the end result is based on the want which I expressed. I had given all the information necessary for my request, and still nobody has bothered to answer even the subquestion of which is a good brand. Advice on features is fine and all, but I don't care about any of them. I simply need a router to split the connection to multiple computers. I didn't think it would be such a difficult question to answer.

Cisco is the best brand, but very pricey. If you do IT work for a living, it's worth considering as that's the brand the vast majority of companies use.

For home use, Linksys and Netgear are the best IMHO.

The last network I worked on had maybe one cisco router in the whole building. The only real experience I ever had with it was in school.

I guess I'm just going to have go look at what's cheapest on newegg.

These days it really doesn't matter as most companies have decent stuff.

You'll always hear the best ones are Linksys, Netgear, SMC, etc.
And you'll hear that worst ones are D-Link, Motorola, etc.

But it's all personal preference. I klnow people that have DLink equipment and have never had a problem. I also know some that had Linksys and thought it was crap.

Only time it really matters is if you are looking for specific features that aren't available on every router.

Linksys routers have treated me well through out the years. Now it's merged with Cisco and I'm not sure how much time and work cisco has put into designing new home routers. But I've never had a reason to stray away from Linksys routers. It would be the one I reccomend.

Cisco 837  and for even better toy factor get an 1800 series And yeah Cisco has definitely dumbed down the linksys brand since they acquired it, in my limited experience with that.

Those are expensive. I got a wired Netgear VPN router from the egg for like 50, and it has been great.

slow down there rambo. no reason to get all pissy when people volunteer information to you. if you want to be like that, though, then two can play. why dont you go research it instead of asking people to do the dirty work for you? you cant tell me reviews of routers dont come up when you search google.

lets break down your post.

have a wireless netgear router. It's a couple years old, and I think it's time to get a new one.

this implies the wireless feature on your router is required and the new router will need to include it. however, in your second post you said you dont need wireless at all. interesting.

What are the good brands these days? Any model in particular worth looking at? Nothing too expensive, only 2-3 computers are on the network, gigabit not necessary. Very little communication between computers, so speed between them doesn't matter.

heard of google? why dont you look up a few brands and come ask if the ones you picked out are ok? by not giving us an example, you have essentially limited your reponses because people wont be bothered to do your dirty work for you. we have no clue what "too expensive" is to you because that is very relative to each individual.

also, you did post specifications in your first post, but you were unclear and inconcise with your wording which lead to miscommunication. maybe you could try not being such a pompus ass when people are trying to help you with your problems. if jack misunderstood your question, which was worded like a monkey on a typewriter, you could have explained it to him like an adult instead of using witty retorts. lastly, dont call me a hypocrite because i didnt start this thread and i just joined in to point out how you could change your posting habits to harbor some more helpful replies.

get this or this if you want wireless included. if you dont want wireless, get this or this (but you will need a hub or switch since this only has 1 LAN port).
