I've got a Geforce Ti4600 that the fan is slowly dying and want to get it replaced before it's too late.

Any recommendations for a comparable or slightly better AGP card for $40 or $50 off Ebay?

Sorry, I've been out of this stuff for awhile. I know this is a dinosaur but any suggestions would be helpful.

What are the specs the card will go into? I think I seen a X1950XT AGP for $60 shiped in the FS section.

I assume you don't game with that card, the Ti4600?

Something like this is much more powerful then the Ti4600 and fits your budget.

This Radeon 2400 isn't a power house by any means, but offers some newer features such as HD video acceleration.

If you want to stick with Nvidia you could get something like this FX5500. It's probably a tad slower then the Ti4600 but is cheap and offers DX9 support. I'm just guessing that it's actually slower, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

NewEgg also has some GeForce 6200 cards, they are no thrills but in your budget, and I'd think comprable to your Ti4600 I think but with DX9 support.

Just a few I saw searching NewEgg. If you could get a good deal on a Radeon 2600XT or 3600 card from Ebay you'd get a lot of feature updates and a lot more performance. On the Nvidia side a 6600GT or 7600GS/GT would be very nice upgrades, but I think they'll be on the high side of your budget if not a bit over.

Anyway, if I was updating an older AGP system on a limited budget those are probably the cards I'd look at.

The MB is a Shuttle AN35N NForce2 Ultra with PC4200 RAM.

Ah a good old Nforce 2. I assume you are using a mid range Athlon XP then as well.

I would probably look for something around a Geforce 6600GT or a Radeon X8xx/X16xx Video card as a good replacement. They can be had for a decent price on ebay and perform much better than the Ti4600.

Yes, Athlon 2500+ I believe.

X16xx is a good choice, however, I would SERIOUSLY consider ditching the platform for a newer one. AGP is dead, has been for several years now, you will only be paying more for less the longer you try and upgrade it.

In my opinion, it would actually be smarter getting a sub $40 AGP card than to splurge on a $300 total system upgrade. If the TI4600 did everything you needed it to, then you dont need a new system.

Also, you can most likely find a suitable heatsink/fan on newegg for your card for under $10. I believe the Geforce 4 series used the same mounting holes as a chipset cooler.

I've seen a used TI4200 in the forums going for something like $25 shipped, and if you need nothing more than that I'm 100% certain that it's only a few FPS off from a TI4600 in most of the games playable on those cards.

Eventually though, he is going to want to upgrade the system, That's why I would suggest that now he should start saving his pennies so that he can do the upgrade when he wants to.

Getting a new chipset cooler for his video card is a good idea, it will keep what he's got going for a while until he is ready to buckle down.

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't use the system for a lot of gaming anymore, but I do use it for some graphics intensive programs in which the Ti4600 seems to be adequate.

Eventually, I do plan on buying/building a new computer but this one won't be thrown out, so I definitely want to get it to a point where its at least reliable.

Any of the following cards will be comparable or better, so get the cheapest you can find...

Radeons:
9600 series
9500 Pro
9700 series
9800 series
X600 series
X700 Pro
X800 series
X850 series
X1300 series
X1600 series
X1650 series
X1900 series
HD2400 series
HD2600 series
HD3450
HD3650
HD3850

Geforces:
Ti 4600
-skips FX lineup-
6200
6600 series
6800 series
7600 series
7800 series
7900 series

I'd say a 6600GT or X1600/X1650 card should work fine, and you should be able to find either under $50.

I've got a used 660GT. I'm about to send the old computer to the recycling center. You want it?

Problem with 6600GT's is they run HOT! I resurface my heatsink and used come good AS on it and that helps, but a 7600 series would be a better option.

I hear you on the old PC thing, mine is running a 5yr old WinXP load, can't reload it like I want too, something on the MB wont allow the FD to work. (have change drives and cables) So I can't load SATA drivers....when I build new PC this one will go to the kids minus the SATA drives.

shenaniganz, I think this is your best bet. You could use the money you save to get a new computer.

If you do end up spending $30 to $50 on a new AGP card, I recommend getting something out of the Radeon HD series so that you can at least watch HD movies on your computer, etc. The GeForce FX 5500, by the way, is incredibly slow - slower than your GeForce Ti 4600.

Funny how people are throwing out cards/computers that are better than what I've got. Oh well. Thanks for not laughing too hard at my antiquated equipment. And thanks for all the suggestions. PM's coming...
