Yep, the mornings were awesome when the road was empty. Had I kept up the pace, we wouldve been ahead of the pack the whole way, but we stopped a lot and by noon, all the others caught up to us

Unfortunately it was mostly overcast the day we went, and I still loved it! Must be so much better with blue skies!

It's awesome. Some days you get lucky and it stays nice all day. But most days by 10-11am it starts to cloud over. Once you're past Hana it starts to clear out again and you're basically in a desert. Nothing but short trees and grass after you pass the pools.

Also, just before you hit Hana Town there is a lava tube tour. It's cheap and very cool. $12/ea I think. Definitely worth the short side trip. I've done it a few times.

I love how this thread just keeps coming back with more info.

We are renting a Jeep Wrangler and I think we may try the road to Hana, but it is hilarious how the various posters are so divided.

If you're renting a jeep and going to Hana definitely keep going all the way around. The road after Hana isn't that bad. A normal rental can go over it pretty easy. The Jeep will have no problem.

And if you can lower your expectations and handle well, well used, try Kihei Rent a Car. It will be cheaper and even the big rental companies may still restrict where you can take a Jeep. And if you really want to adventure, take the NW road from town back to Lahaina. There are some nail biters there. It is a dangerous road in places. I think you get better views if you go from the west side to the east.

And if you stop at the blowhole, don't be a frigging idiot. Waves will wash up onto that shelf. In June, an idiot got swept down the blowhole. It was fatal. The Pacific in Hawai'i is anything but. If you don't respect the fact that the surf can change in a heartbeat, it will Darwinize you.

We just got back, and we had a great time.

The restaurant my wife wanted to go to for her birthday was Spago in the 4 Seasons Hotel in Wailea. It was really really good, but expensive. I would definitely go again. We had the 9 course tasting menu and it was fantastic.

We also ate at Dukes, Hula Grill, Mama's Fish House, and a couple of other spots. I also wanted to try Ruth Chris' as I had never been to one, and I must say that for the price, this was the most disappointing meal. The steaks were good, but the service, appetizers, salad and sides were just OK, and I would have hoped for better. Lahaina is a challenge to find free parking, with prices ranging from $3 - $10 for the evening.

The seafood was really good everywhere we ate, and I especially liked Mama's.

We did not take the road all the way to Hana. I like driving curvy roads, but my wife ... not so much. Rather than risk having her get car sick, we spent the afternoon at the pool drinking beer.

We stayed at the Honua Kai Resort, which is about 3 - 4 miles north of Lahaina. The location was great, although we really did need the rental car, as just about everything we wanted to do required driving to get there. We did spend a lot of time sitting by the pool, walking the beach and playing in the surf.

Oh, man, I was looking for Paia, I used to live there for a couple of years in the early 1970's, but looking it up I see Mama's Fish House is there. Must have started after my time there. I remember only Larry's in Paia, wonder if it's still there.

Mama's is about 1.5 miles outside Paia...and they've been in business since 1973. (not sure if they've been in the same location all that time or not)

OMG, 1973 (about May) is the year I left Maui (Paia, actually, that was where I was living, had a room at Larry's!). :$ I used to dive tako and sell them to the Paia markets for a buck a pound. I was known around Paia as Diver Dan, a couple of my close friends called me Killer.

I had a good meal at Spago in Vegas many years back. For the price, it wasn't amazing, but if you forget price it was quite good.

Best meals I had on Maui were prepared by me. I used to eat lobster, crab, fish, pineapple, macadamia nuts, mangoes, avocados, guavas for free!

I got back Tuesday morning... it was great. I found an awesome hole in the wall in Paia called Paia Fish Market. $9.50 for a Mahi Mahi burger and potato hash, which was the best fish I've had in a long time. I didn't even make a trip to the Four Seasons or Mama's to save money, instead we went to the fish market 5x, worth every cent I paid there. Fladbread Pizza wasn't as good as I remember it. They tried to sell nonalcoholic mojito's, which I was a little dissappointed w/

We took a tour for the Road to Hana, which I admit was awesome... it took the whole day though and the southern portion of the road isn't paved, so I'm glad we didn't personally drive it. We still wound up putting about 600 miles on the car, lol, driving from Kaanapali to Paia for lunch every day. Over $120 in gas...

Next time I think I'm going to do one of the other islands.
