I love how this thread just keeps coming back with more info.
We are renting a Jeep Wrangler and I think we may try the road to Hana, but it is hilarious how the various posters are so divided.
Yep, the mornings were awesome when the road was empty. Had I kept up the pace, we wouldve been ahead of the pack the whole way, but we stopped a lot and by noon, all the others caught up to us
Unfortunately it was mostly overcast the day we went, and I still loved it! Must be so much better with blue skies!

Oh, man, I was looking for Paia, I used to live there for a couple of years in the early 1970's, but looking it up I see Mama's Fish House is there. Must have started after my time there. I remember only Larry's in Paia, wonder if it's still there.
OMG, 1973 (about May) is the year I left Maui (Paia, actually, that was where I was living, had a room at Larry's!). :$ I used to dive tako and sell them to the Paia markets for a buck a pound. I was known around Paia as Diver Dan, a couple of my close friends called me Killer.Mama's is about 1.5 miles outside Paia...and they've been in business since 1973. (not sure if they've been in the same location all that time or not)
I had a good meal at Spago in Vegas many years back. For the price, it wasn't amazing, but if you forget price it was quite good.
