Hey all,

I used a NVIDIA board previously with XP that included a driver software that allowed you to choose which programs (like Explorer) had priority when accessing the internet. It worked great! but now I am using a Gigabyte board and wanted to know if there was a software that did the same thing. I cannot seem to find it, but seems odd that such a great program only exists in NVIDIA driver package. Any one know?

THANX!

Welcome to AnanaTech Forums.

What exactly you are talking about, what is the actual difference that you see now?

Is it a feature of the nVidia "lame" build in firewall?

You need to prioritizing IE as oppose to what else is accessing the Internet in front of IE.

Hi thanks for responding so fast. In the NVIDIA forceware there was a section that "prioritized Packets" with a drop down list and all installed programs. It worked great! Now I have Gigabyte and if I am downloading a file in say, bittorrent, and I start using explore to get on the internet it takes forver to load pages because it waits for the large file download. The NVIDIA driver setting , if it gave explorer 'priority' the internet page would just download fast and first, then go back to downloading large file. As it is now if I am downloading the internet browser is unusable, because it takes forever to download page

I know I'm repeatimng myself, but that is really it in a nutshell, there has got to be a program that allows you to prioritize IExplorer or a game or anyother internet software, right?

Software is a bandaid. The root of the issue is that your router is not powerful enough to handle the load you're putting on it with bittorrent. The solutions are to A) decrease the number of connections in bittorrent, or B) upgrade your router.

Hi Again...
Thanx for you're help, but 1, I am not using a router just a cable modem, 2, the problem exists and its very bad even if downloading 1 file, not many. 3, even though the software was a "bandaid" as you say, it was a bandaid that worked fantastically. So again, the question is:
Is there a software utility that does what the Nvidia MOBO driver software did, which was priorotize packet flow for specific programs, like IExplorer???? I am really flabergasted that this is not a popular thing to do.

Thanx

nVidia came up with this idea of adding native Software Firewall to the Chipset Drivers.

Unfortunately it was Not implemented well and it is a known pracatice to stay away from using this Firewall.

Your comment is the first positive comment in 5 years that I hear about this Firewall.

In any case, sitting with a computer connected directly to a Cable Internet is quite risky.

Even if you have only one computer you should use a Router.

Get yourself a Router that can do Qos and you will be able to prioritize the Downloads (given the money that you save on "Free" BT downloads it should not be a problem to buy one).

Otherwise, find a Software that can do Qos or Traffic Shaping.

Example, http://www.netlimiter.com

How about this for the problem: Your upload bandwidth is congested, thus the download for everything else is affected.

Happened when I used a less than stellar BT client.

Try using utorrent or bittornado and throttling the global upload to 25k or 50k (depends all on your connection)

Thanks again,

OK, trying netlimiter now...seems to be working tho I dont know how, all I did was install it...more on that when I use it for a few hours...

bobdole...the upload speed is irrelevant, I can have it set to upload at 1KB per second, but when I hit internet explorer it takes forever to navigate.

OK, I see a lot of people flaming Nvidia's packet prioritizer, but for myslef, i used it over a year with m 650i ultra mother board, multiple OS installs under XP and it worked fine, once I set it up. I can download, upload numerous files at one time, maxing out my 1 MB connection, but when I clicked on internet explorer it would cut right in and take priority.

Kind of mystified that these packet prioritizers are not very very common.

I set it up to priorotize packet flow for specific programs, like IExplorer.
Spent hours trying to get better results with it.
Every speed test i ran with it dropped my download speed by 4m to 6m.
With out it can push 30-31m down, with it I got 23-25.
It is impossable to shut off
Had to remove it on 3 seperate times to get my dowloads back to 2.77m a sec.
Used it with a DiLink 4100 with Traffic Shaping disabled.

What is the internal IP address of your computer? If it starts with 10. 172. or 192. your cable modem is acting like a router and is dying under the session load. If it is open to the internet (you're braver than I am) you might be seeing the XP 1/2 open connection "fix" the MS put in that can really screw up performance.

Hi imagoon, thanx...
My ip address is niether of those. I am running Windows 7, I have a router lynksys BEFN2PS4 but I couldnt get it to work for some reason, don't know if it is incompatable with W 7.

So 95 people looked at this post and no one can say they know of a program that will prioritize packets for specific program like explorer. I'll say it again I am flabergasted!

Hello,

Well, I hooked up my router that has been lying around unused for several years and now my browsing is lightning fast even when downloading multiple large files in the backround, that suggestion did the trick. I never thought I needed the router with only 1 computer, I used to use it with my laptop, never considered the security aspect.

Any way PROBLEM SOLVED!

Thanx again.

Hey all 1 more question.

my gigabyte ep45-ud3p Mobo has two lan conectors, will I see any benefit from plugging both of those into my router?

Thanx in advance

No, you'll only break things if you do that.

You can plug it but it is uselss at best, and many time can cause trouble.

Useless? Yeah, since one computer runing client OS' can not use two NIC on the same Network at the same time (does not matter wire or wireless).

If you run real server OS with adequate network hardware teaming is possible.

Hello again,

I know next to nothing about networking, so take all this with a 1/2 grain of salt.

When I activated both lan connectors in bios and did a fresh install of windows 7 rc it 'joined' the networks...
I did speed tests on both single and dual lans plugged into router and there was absolutley no difference, so I just unplugged the second line and deactivated the second lan.

Also, just for the record, the router solution definitly 'works', but it is not 'lightening fast' like I said, just fast.

I have to say it again, I used the packet prioritizer with my nvidia board for about 1 1/2 years, and that worked lightening fast, still do not know why everyone flames it. Still seems to me like a software solution would be better than just the router, but my experience is strictly based on my own usage at home.

Thanx again for all the help, this is a great forum.

I used the nvidia software and it was crap, Limited like crap compared to my router.
Your speed tests would be the same, with both plugged in, it still only uses one of the ethernet interfaces.
The reason there aren't more of these around is because generally someone that is smart enough to know what QOS is, is smart enough to do it on a hardware level, like with a router. Like everyone has said the software is a bandaid.

Hey nicky boy...

Being how you are so 'smart' why don't you educate me about QOS?
