On 7 AUG 2011, in Afghanistan, a CH-47 went down and 30 US military died. Of those killed were 22 Navy SEALs, along with Air Force and Army personnel.

My question is: Did the President order all US flags to fly at half staff in their honor? I don't remember. Do any of you?

Thanks.

The real question is... do you realize who those soldiers were that died, and what they did in the months prior to their deaths?

People have gotten so braindead that they dont even realize the significance of what happened here. Just a bunch of drooling moron sheep waiting to be sheared...

Based on the site you linked, the answer is no, and if he had it would be inconsistent with past proclamations.
The site doesn't go back far enough to show what previous presidents would have done.

A better question would be "Is the U.S. flag required to be lowered when a U.S. soldier dies in service to his country?"

Haven't found any info on that; but several sites mention that only the President or state governors can order the flag to half staff.

Judging from the website you linked it looks like the respective state governors order the flag to half staff when a soldier from their state is killed in combat, or on such a day that the governor specifies.

All of our fallen soldiers are honored every year on Memorial Day.

from http://www.gettysburgflag.com/FlyFlagHalfMast.php: the " How long should the flag be at half staff?" section

"On Memorial Day, the day set aside to honor all the people who have died while serving the United States & originally called Decoration Day, the flag is flown at half-Staff until noon, then raised to full staff until sundown."

Never knew about the half staff until noon part, I've always flown it all day. Of course I never knew about flying the black ribbon when the flag can't be lowered either.

If it was not lowered that is unfortunate, but they were in a war so I can understand why it was not lowered. Soldiers die over there everyday and leaving our flag at half mast for over a decade is not embraced by anyone.

The reason I asked that question was political. I have since, from very good info from other sites, have determined I was wrong in my perception of current news.

I asked a serious question and got great info back.

I would like to thank all for that.

I tend to agree with Pr0d1gy. My gut feeling is that the flag should be lowered to half mast when any service member dies in service, but in war that would be most of the time. If the flag is flown at half mast most of the time, does it really represent anything anymore, or is it just the new normal?

I agree, in that flying the flag at half staff during wartime would "cheapen" the significance.

The site I originally linked did say that individual citizens could fly the flag at half staff or black ribboned: "Private citizens and non government buildings may choose to fly their flags at half staff to honor more local leaders. The Flag Code does not exclude any citizen, whether they belong to an organization or not, whether they are recognized very locally or regionally. Examples of deceased citizens that might be honored with by lowering the Flag to half-staff include local religious leaders, youth leaders, honored teachers or sports coaches, local politicians, or a local hero. There need be no authorization from the government for the private sector (non-government) to use the Flag to honor any citizen.

Trying to make political points from the death of these people is . . . .

typical actually.

Did the OP care more about the deaths, or that it might be a way to attack "Fartbama" or "barry HUSSEIN! bobama" or whatever name it is this week.

I'm not sure about other states but as far as I can remember in Missouri any time a service member has been killed our governor orders flags to half staff.

I was more concerned about the victims and their families/friends. I was discussed at all the politicians trying to make this about them and their little programs.

It's an election year and they are coming out of the woodwork with "ideas". As for me, I was praying for the victims.....then the politicians were all over the news. I wish, just once, these fuckers would shut up.

Unfortunately, I think it's the latter considering the way he has answered his own original query...
