If you go duing normal school hours, the doors are unlocked to the Stata Center (the weird building). You should be able to get in and walk around (though it's really just a bunch of unfinished concrete and weird staircases on the inside. If you know anyone at MIT, it's probably easier to get around as the buildings are numbered and connected in a fairly convoluted manner. Don't know what wrinkes summer throws into this.
As for food, all the on campus options suck. If you're looking for a quick deli sammich, Cinderella's is not too bad, and La verde's (the mini grocery store + deli in the student center) is OK. If you want to eat the way real MIT students do , eat at the food trucks near the stata center. If you're looking for decent food, there are a few places in the kendall square area, including Cambridge Brewing Company (who also have great beer). Central sq/ harvard sq have tons of more food options, so if you're willing to trek out that far (probably like a 15-20 min walk), let me know and I'll give you more options.
Sadly due to the construction of the new cancer center, all of the food trucks got moved a few blocks down past the kendall T stop. It's really inconvenient so most bio building/stata people don't go anymore. There's a chinese food truck on main st. that's good for a cheap lunch, they let you choose two entrees for 5 bucks.
I like the restaurant next to CBC, Tommy Doyles, they have good fish and chips. If you go to Harvard square, Le's (formerly Pho Pasteur) is very good. Along mass ave., there's an indian restaurant called Royal Bengali which has great buffet (available until 2 or 3PM, possibly weekends only).
Weak, the food trucks were perfect when you had very little time between classes in building 36 and the stata center. I havent been on campus since january, and stopped being fulltime at MIT since last year ( I was finishing up my VI-A thesis in austin).
I totally forgot about the royal bengal. That, and India pavillion are the pick of the indian buffets in that area. India pavillion is on western avenue, right off mass ave in central square, near that awesome little falafel place (moody's falafel palace).
Man, I miss cambridge and it's fun little haunts.
Eh, I still go anyways to that one Cambodian/Asian food truck with the tiny old lady.
