I want to upgrade a couple of old pc's that my wife and I use for work. However, the proprietary software that we are forced to use will not work well with memory speeds faster than PC133. So I am looking for recomendations for PC133 compatible boards that are currently still available for purchase. I would like a board capable of running an Athlon XP processor in the 1600+ or higher speed, and it needs to be a very stable, high quality board because these will be used for business purposes. No constant need for reboots or a lot of tweaking can be tolerated.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

it is based on the VIA KT133A chipset
i've havent heard many complaints about this board
i'm not sure about the stability part, but it should be fine

I am happy with my Gigabyte GA-7ZXE. It is a standard ATX board which can take up to 1.5GB of PC/133 SDR SDRAM. It has been extremely stable in my experience, even with the processor, fsb, and pci running slightly overclocked.

Edit: the board uses the Via KT133A chipset.

Actually the best thing right now for ya would probable be the arock KT266a board. It has the updated southbridge and can take either Sdram OR DDR. I can't remember the whole name but someone here should be able to fill you n on the rest.

Thanks for the replys.

I have used a couple of the MSI K7T Turbo 2 boards in the past year and have had no complaints about them, but I wanted some ideas other than my own.
It would be nice to have a board that could use PC133 now and have DDR available for later when the new software is supposed to be available (they say 18 months now, it was supposed to be 12 months away about a year ago so I'm not holding my breath). I have never used a board by ECS before. Does anyone have any first hand experience with the ECS K7S5A (good or bad) that I should consider.

Thanks again

Not THAT question again. There are enough threads on the K7S5A already. Please use the Search function. btw, this board is being revamped to revision 5 aka K7S5A pro, mostly unchanged but with an added USB 2.0 controller. (From the picture, it seems it became a little bit shorter too, fitting really small cases better.)

If you are recycling old cases and old RAM, please be aware that Athlon XP will need LOTS more power than whatever old thing you're removing ... and also be aware that Athlon XP chipsets are much more demanding on the RAM, as far as compliance to PC133 timings goes. You wouldn't be the first to discover that their old RAM doesn't really cut it.

Check out the Biostar M7VIG Pro. Go to the Hot Deals forum and search for motherboard and there is a thread on PC133 compatible boards. Check out what Praxis has to say
about the M7VIG in his posts. I put a system together for my son with this board and it is very stable. Very happy.
