So I just assembled a new rig and with Christmas coming up, would like some games that will put it to the test.
- Win 7 x64
- AMD Phenom II X4 955
- 80GB SSD
- 8 GB RAM
- Radeon 4870 vid. card
- 21.5" LCD

I don't do WoW (well, did, but quit) and prefer FPS; not really into sports games.

Or, if there is a list of Windows 7 games somewhere, I'd be happy to look myself.

Appreciate the help!

Most any game that runs on Windows XP will also run on Windows 7. So you don't have to search out a list of "Windows 7 games", in case that was the impression you were under.

I'm playing Fallout 3 currently and really enjoying it. If you like FPS-style, but also like the idea of quests, a story, and a good amount of NPC interaction, you'll probably like Fallout 3.

Interesting... I was not aware of that. So although Far Cry 2 says "XP and Vista (only)" [source: http://bit.ly/2BWfpm] it would also work on 7?

Thanks for the recommendation on Fallout 3 - I'll have to check it out.

Windows 7 was officially released less than a month ago. There's a ton of software that won't list Windows 7 under the system requirements. I bet that a lot of the software that was released before Windows 7 will never list Windows 7 under the system requirements. Since Windows 7 is based largely on Vista, most software that runs on Vista will Windows 7.

Crysis being on sale is probably the best choice. I'm thinking about getting it myself since MW2 is a crapshoot.

Borderlands. It's the only FPS I have gotten into in a LONG while, like since Halo 2.

We need to get something straightened out right now.
Windows 7 is NOT Windows 7. It is Windows 6.1. It says so when it boots up if you use Verbose booting.
It IS Vista, with patches. Because Vista was a mess. ANYTHING that works for Vista will work for 7. Because 7 isnt 7, its Vista Revised.

You guys got to read a little more stuff in the OS forum. That isnt a gaming question you asked, its a question about getting an application running in a particular OS. Those guys could easily explain why things are the way they are.
Freakin nerds!

I'm really enjoying Risen so I can definitely recommend that one for Windows 7 if you like RPGs...

That's like saying Windows XP isn't Windows XP, it's really NT 5.1. Which means Vista really isn't Vista. Which means you aren't really you.

Your system will be able to run any game on the market with graphics turned all the way up due to the resolution you'll be playing at.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is very easy to recommend if you like multiplayer FPS games. It looks very good with the graphics maxed out.

Dragon Age: Origins is a traditional RPG where you control a group of characters as they fight through various dungeons. It's very, very good and you'll like it if you liked any other games in the genre (D&D, Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy). The graphics are aimed at realism and aren't very stylish as a result, but the story is why this game excels.

Borderlands (RPG/FPS) is a great hybrid if you have a friend to play it with. It's alright solo, but the cooperative gameplay is what turns it into an excellent game. The graphics are much more stylish but you may want to check out a preview first because some people love them and some people hate them.

Torchlight is a cheap little Diablo clone that manages to be great by removing a lot of the tedium and really giving you the feeling of being powerful by killing 20 enemies in a couple of seconds. Graphics are decent but not great.

Dawn of Discovery (Anno 1404) is a slow paced city builder like SimCity where you establish a colony in the Orient in 1404 and try to build it up to a large city. I've always liked the genre but the Anno series in particular is really good with the emphasis on trade routes.

Fallout 3 is a really great RPG/FPS with a poorly written main plot arc and perhaps my least favorite ending of any game. It's worth playing but I wouldn't prioritize it.

Ahh, sweet, sweet Dragon Age. How thee has turned me into an insomniac.

I've heard pretty good things about Dragon Age, but nothing that would really set it apart. Does it really stress a new system?

BTW, "thou" is the nominative form you should use. "Thee" is objective.

Nothing is going to stress a system if the OP is playing with a 21.5" LCD but Dragon Age doesn't really have amazing graphics. What sets Dragon Age apart is the story.

Wow - thanks for the great reply. I'll have to look into those and see if I can convince a buddy to play Borderlands.

Correct usage would be "Thou hast."

Far Cry 2, while repetitive, can be pretty fun and really stress a processor at high settings.
