hey all,
im stilli n the process of standardizing our ghost images. what i need seems fairly simple but i just havent been able to find it yet. maybe this is where you guys come into play.

i need to change a settings that tells the default user profile to send all temp files to C:\TEMP instead of documents and settings/%userprofile%.... etc...ive checked up and down the registry and changed it every i could, but everytime a new user is added, it defaults back. i even went into the ntuser.dat file in the default user profile and changed everything i could there. is there something im missing? maybe im not doing it right?

well, any help would be appreciated,
tia

Easy one.
Right click my computer, select properties.
Select the Advanced Tab
Select the Environmental Variables Button.
Point the TEMP folder to wherever you like.

heh, yeah you think its that easy!

what i really need is to set that C:\TEMP dir whenever anyone logs into a machine automatically. we want to not have to worry about if someon logged onto someone elses machine for today and now they cant get a certain app to work.

thanks anyways

Could you clarify that for me. I think you might be complicating the issue a bit, or I don't understand your needs entirely.
There are two types of environmental variables on that page, System and User. You should be able to accomplish your goal with one or the other.

ok, sorry for the confusion.
when you create a new local user in win2k it takes its regstry(ntuser.dat) settings from the default user profile. within this registry dat file, it sets the User Environmental variables to point temp to documents and settings...etc.
now, i know how to change it in the regsitry and in the environmental variables section of the my computer>props. now what i need to do is make sure that any user that logs into this computer, always points to C:\TEMP. it doesnt now. if i create a new user, it still points to documents and settings etc. i used to think it was in the default user ntuser.dat, but ive changed everything i can imagine that has to do with it but its not working.

i hope this cleared something up for you!

You can't just dupe the ntuser.dat file from the one you edited and replace it in the default users folder? This way whenever a new user logs on, the temp directory pointer should be to where you want it. Don't know if this works, but just a suggestion.

There is no way to change the user environment variable and have it stick to all users.
It is a "feature" so that when you create a new user, he/she gets his/her own data folders, thus keeping other users from opening or accessing files each other user has been working on, etc.etc.

You can change the system variable to c:\temp. and it will stick in you;re ghost, but other than that you are out of luck.
been down that road in the past with our Ghost images, even called Microsoft Premier Support about it and they confirmed.
(if that means anything to you.)

You can run a command with Sysprep to run a certain command each time a user logs onto a pc, you cold try to write a script to do this...but it really isnt worth the hassle. I dont see why you think programs wont work going to that temp dir..they are designed to go there...i DO know that some programs hate the path length to the temp folder, i.e. Lotus Notes and it's wonderful Spell checker.

ok ...i just made a script that runs in the default user startup group. it was easy but i was trying to get it in the image. oh well. its needed for some specific banking applications that we have to deal with for a while until we upgrade to a newer windows based system!
