Hey Bleep are you an astronomy buff? I have like 5 years of astronomy mag back issues Anyways, if you were then maybe you'd agree with me on this. The telescope is hardly worth the price. First of all look at the tripod.... a Altazimuth mount? ICK. Even though this is half off it's way overpriced to begin with... I would much rather get an apochromatic for $400, but that's just me.

edit>> oh wait, I just crapped on this thread... d'oh! My first one... oh well, sorry!

I think it looks pretty neato for $400... considering it has motors that move it to any position that you pick.. although a telescope that hooks up to a laptop would be much cooler.

NO NO it is not a alt az mount it is a fork mount.
Even if it was, no problem. I have a 10" Dobsonian that I built and unless you want to take pictures the thing is great, you just have to know the sky and be able to read a star map. I also have a 6" on a equatorial mount and prefer the Dob.

Wallyworld has this scope with an electronic ocular for display to a video source (laptop) for $149 for Christmas.
Not that bad for the money.

The telescope IS alt-azimuth mounted, but since it has dual motors and is computer-controlled, this dosn't matter much unless you do a lot of manual pointing. In that case, I prefer equatorial mount.

Do a search on "telescope" and I'm sure you'll find the thread on the DS114EC at Amazon. That's a much better deal... <$200 for everything.

<< Yeha, I dont want a telescope for $400. Maybe like 150 >>

$150 wont ever get you a decent scope with tripod. All you'll get at that price is junk. Much better off just using your eyeballs to scope the skies than a $150 "500x zoom" telescope.

I have a scope with the eletronic starfinder but I can't get it to work very well. After training the drive the declination is WAY off..
I've tried everythig...

Are there any software updates you can download from the web? If that doesn't help, have you called technical support for the manufacturer?

I have a 6" Dobsonian but it's such a pain to lug around and so hard to find stuff (we obviously aren't real sharp in that area) that we almost never use it. It produces a great image on most stuff when you finally set it up and find it, but I'd LOVE to have one of the autofinder jobs that would hook up to a laptop for control. What would you recommend that will be comparable to the views produced by a 6" Dob, yet have the automated capabilities?

WHat's the best telescope I could get for $400? I have a canon G1, so it would be neat to be able to hook it up to my digital camera also. You guys know what your talking about, help a brother out! thanks -WIll

ChopOmatic,
The Meade ETX 125 is the closest to your 6 inch dob with GOTO control. About $850.

Hey Jegercola, like I said earlier, go for a meade apochromatic at, I think, the discovery store. Very nicely built, great for pictures, 3 eye peices (nice plossl too). Yes, this particular telescope is way too expensive to pay $400 for, but also yes for $150 you really can't get anything good. And this isn't like I see poeple on this forum say all the time: "you can't get a 1.2gig cpu! Those are crap! You need an XP 1900 if you want to do anything!" For $150 you really do get crap... go to toys r us, even their telescopes run from 80-150... brxndxn, most telescopes now come with motors, and most of the higher end (apochromatic!) come with drive bays that you can plug all sorts of neat things in (laptop!). ChopOMatic you have a 6" Dob?! I'm so jealous!
