i didn't say it was out of specification. rather i expected the 860 platinum to have approximately equal efficiency at such a low load as 750 gold, but the gold was on a completely different level.

the platinum dissipated 30% more ! ! ! we're not talking 1%, 2% or 5% but 30% ! ! !

but you are correct that below 90W load technically it could have 0% efficiency and still qualify as platinum.

both PSUs were plugged directly into the wall, bypassing the surge protector.

10W is approx. equal.
30% of nothing is nothing

So how did you measure the power draw?
Edit: I see you have a kill-a-watt. That is probably not accurate at low loads especially with lower PF and efficiency.

Not to be captain obvious here, but there are other ways to silence a PC. What about using sound dampening foam to quarantine off the computer from the rest of the room? A step further would be to build a wooden box lined with foam that the computer would reside in. If you know how to deal with sound you can create a situation where any stray sound can be nulled out.

I know it sounds silly but if you are recording then it's worth going the extra mile. Ideally if you didn't mind a wall modification and had an available adjoining room, you can put the computer in the other room and run the cables through the wall to just get rid of the sound source completely. These are kind of extreme but you get the point.

He is building a computer with fans, NO SIDES, and a considerably over-powerful PSU. And expects it to be completely silent. Anybody else see the the contradiction here?

There's no guarantee that a watercooled unit is any more silent than a fanless Seasonic or Kingston. Also, why add pump noise to the equation?

I agree, but the pump noise is minimal and would problably be hidden by the CPU cooler. But i agree with you

Probably not. Most pump noise I have heard is at a different frequency, and I have heard even people with fans say that they they can hear them.

i might consider foam inside my case but Auralex seems to make foam that is mostly too thick, and designed for more broadband absorption than just high frequency clicks and whine. if there was some good, heavy 1" foam ...

Isnt a watercooled PSU a monumentally bad idea?

i would think so. in fact i think any watercooled electronics is not the best idea. in a car engine you sort of can't get around it - but if you could simply put a few heat pipes there and throw out all pumps, reservoirs etc then i am pretty sure that would be considered massive progress for that industry. maybe that will happen someday.
