need advice about car speakers

ok, I want to get my bf some speakers for his car, for his birthday. I am gonna get a gift certificate to have them installed for him too, but I am really clueless. He has a really nice mp3/cd player in his car, with just the basic speakers, and he has been talking about upgrading. So, any advice on what to buy? I don't have a ton of money, but I would at least like to maybe get him started. And, should I get an amplifier, is that something he should have first?

I like Polk for car audio. They have some nice 6x8/5x7's for under $100. Expect to pay around $50 for the install.

Was just double checking since I know some models make changes. This happened to me and BB sold me the wrong stuff so it's always good to double check.

1. they use 6x8's in the rear
2. they will break down/be recalled/spontaneously combust
