I’m older and have not played computer games for 30+ years. When I did play games, it was Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, etc. These were my favorite and would love to play them again.

For my retirement, my wife bought me a new gaming computer to start playing games again. It has an i9, 64 GB RAM, RTX 3070 ti, SSD’s and I'm on a Google 5GB home network.

Are these above games still available in an updated form that can utilize 1440 or 4K?

How do I know which games utilize the full capacity of my graphics card?

What other similar games (FPS) would be similar to the above?

Lastly, where would I purchase these games? Best Buy?

I want to utilize my graphics card (especially since it cost around $700). Any recommendations?

You can get some through Steam, GOG, EPIC Store and Amazon Prime Gaming.

Some are remastered and some aren't so how they will run or look is a good question.

I just bought Quake 4 on sale from Steam. Best resolution in the menu was 1080P. Looks good still.

The older games probably won't be supporting anything new in terms of updated resolutions or graphics, but some of those titles have more current versions like Doom and Wolfenstein that will let you show off what your PC can do at 4K.

Last year I got Quake 1 for free from Amazon Prime Gaming. It uses the KEX engine and supports 1440P resolution. It looks a lot like the old GL Quake.

Another option is source-ports. If you have the original game data from the classic games you can run modernized versions of them for free. Lookup gzDoom, Raze, Quake Spasm, etc.

You can run whatever resolution you please by editing the config file.

I don't like doing that.

It's just the way I am.

Painkiller might be the most modern take I can remember. Warhammer:Boltgun maybe?

Obligatory mentions: HL1 (Black Mesa, HL2, Doom 2016/Eternal, FEAR1

If you like playing deathmatches against other players, I think Quake Champions is pretty fun and has some pretty good graphics. Only problem I have with it is waiting to be matched to a game can sometimes take a while; it's not like Q3 where you could find a server with an opening and just join the fight.

gzDoom is good, I use that. Doom 2016 and Eternal would make use of your card, 2016 is closer to the original games. Among older games, Painkiller and Hard Reset have this type of gameplay too.

OP is in luck thanks to the modding community and the recent spate of remasters that have old games running well on new machines with some QOL updates as well.

And there are plenty more.

Good place to start is Nightdive Studios. They've made a name for themselves remastering old 90's era shooters for the 2020 crowd.

Quake 4 (and other games) are available for free this month if you have an amazon prime membership. The key redeems with gog.com who sells drm free games. You can either install their gaming client to install the game or download the drm free game by itself.

Click weekly games here to see what freebies they have this month. They will use various gaming clients to install. https://gaming.amazon.com/home

Also check out our "Free games for the week thread" sticky thread here in this forum for current free games.
