Need advice on dealing with teacher...

Im in my Senior year in High School and we are supposed to take Physics for the science credit. So i took the adv. Physics course. This year however, someone had the bright idea to recruit a teacher from overseas.

Therefore i wound up with a teacher whose first day in the country of the United States was her first day teaching. As a result, i cannot understand half of what she says. She is a nice lady, but she cannot teach at all. She was teaching in the Commonwealth Governors school, but was kicked out after the AP Physics kids could not learn the required material. BUt she is still teaching Adv. Physics and I am having a lot of trouble now.

Most of the time, we learn the material by ourselves as we take the test. The HW and worksheets do very little because there is no "real" instructor to teach us the material and explain it.

Additionally, this 9 weeks she collected class work even though half the class wasn't done. She said just pass in what you have, so i did. Lo and behold i get the paper back and everything i didn't do was marked wrong. Not only that on my interim report, i have random grades that were missing (I redid them to try to avoid any problems).

So the other day i got a pass from her to return to my previous class and work on the Computer Program. We didn't finish, so the next day i had that class, we stayed late trying to finish it up. She reported us "MIA" (Missing in Action) even though she sent a student over to the room with the teacher and he told her we were there. So the next day the class was taking the test. She tried to make me and my friend take the test. We weren't there the last 2 days of class (No study guide, and we didn't even know what the unit was on yet). I flat out said "No" (respectfully), and apologized for not asking explicit permission on the second day and she let my friend and i complete the study guide out in the hall.

Well today i came back, still not understanding in the least about the subject and tried to take the test. There is no math or anything, it is all about Gravity, and the Laws of Gravitational Motion (Newton, Einstein).

Well try as i might i couldn't learn the material as i tested. Im coming back tomorrow to finish, but the material on the Study guide, while it still has to deal with Gravity, it does nothing for me on the test.

I dont know what to do! I dont want to cause problems, but earlier i thought i could just do really well the rest of the 9 weeks and bring my grade up, now i realize i cant. Should i make a trip to my guidance counselor and tell her the situation?

I realize foreign teachers are common in college, but none of them to this extent. Not only that, i AM still in high school.

The class average is a D (I have an 84 for some god unknown reason). My grades aren't bad. I have straight 100's on the assignments except for the random ones which she grades weird and some quizes (By some i mean ~18 100's and 5 other grades ranging from 69-94).

Can anyone just offer some suggestions on this?

-Kevin

Cliff Notes:
[*]Teacher new to country and can barely speak english
[*]Managing in her class by teaching myself
[*]Cannot teach myself this material
[*]Having trouble keeping my grade up now, even though i have nearly straight 100's

If the class average is a D, I would definetly take it to the principal. At this point, it's obvious that she's doing something wrong.

WTF?? you should take action dude, if you really think she can't teach no matter how nice she is and even if your classmates think the opposite, go the the principal. I've suffered this kind of BS and left my uni. recently as no one was interested to bring any changes.

talk to the principal. if there are more students who feel the same, go together.

Do not let anyone interfere with what you have to do to pass your schooling.

Well all the classes say the same thing. And the thing is, i know she is smart. She has a Masters in Chemical Engineering, but she just cant convey those ideas.

Additionally, people have gone and spoken to their guidance counselors. Parents have come in, yet she still is there. Part IS the classes fault, because a lot of my friends and other peers are simply unwilling to learn and take advantage of her a lot. But even when everone is attentive everything above still happens.

I believe the class average is a low C or D.

It should also be strange for me to come to them. I never have problems, and also they SHOULD be wondering whats up with my grades.

I have 5 AP classes and 2 advanced classes. IN the AP Classes i have all A's and some high B's. In the other advanced class i have an A. Physics which is significantly easier (especially for me who wants to become an engineer) I have low B's and this 9 weeks, as of right now, i have a C!

I tried seeing her alone after class (so no pressure) and telling her my concerns but it got me no where. I know she is trying but for all her efforts, they aren't working in the slightest.

Sorry for the bad teacher...but I am failing to see many of your points. Like how you expected to take the test later because you were out of the previous two classes by your own choice?

Well based on your replies, tomorrow ill ask permission in AP Government (93...SOOO CLOSE to an A right now ) to go to guidance. My teacher will hopefully understand.

I just hate causing problems, even if i would suffer because if i did nothing. But right now it looks as if i have no choice.

SHE allowed me to work on that class (I had a deadline for the program to be finished). However, she didn't give me any of the material, she didn't tell me anything about the unit, and she didn't even give me the study guide!! Yet i walk into class, and she expects me to take it.

If i had been given the study guide, or at least some practice worksheets/bookwork, i would be more than happy to take it. But when the first time i see the entire unit contents is on the test, i cannot take that test.

All that stuff is your responsibility. It is your job to make sure if you miss class that you get all of the materials.

I tried, she didn't have anything, or didn't understand my question. When she gave me the pass to my last class the first day, she didn't have anything to give me when i asked. The second day, attmittedly is my fault. I should have asked explicit permission to stay and complete my program. So yes, i should have done something there, but no teacher will ask a student to take a graded test on the material the first time he/she has seen it. She does have her responsibility to teach here.

I assure you, if this happened in college, the professor would laugh at you if you asked to take the test later. My high school teachers would have laughed about it too. Again, you skipped class and didn't get any of the materials/check with classmates. The first day is understandable because you asked about it...but the second?

I already said that it was my fault. Even though she knew exactly where i was and what i was doing, she tried to penalize me anyway.

I didn't skip class. I was in a different class working on a program for a test in AP Java. I did check with the teacher, and i did check with my classmates. I knew that they had a worksheet and had a test coming up and what not, but what was i supposed to do based off of that?

I assure you, if this happened in college, the professor would laugh at you if you asked to take the test later.

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than high school. I would not be staying late in one class to finish an assignment in College. Additionally, i had a JUST reason to ask to take the test later (Dont have a clue what it is on).

Yeah, I don't understand why you're frustrated with that, it was YOUR OWN CHOICE. Hell in university, profs don't care if you even show up to lectures or not, everything is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, regardless of the fact that she didn't have anything to give you. She probably still was planning out the study guide and was going to give them out at a later date.

Either way, the whole test incident was entirely your own fault.

Yeah, I don't understand why you're frustrated with that, it was YOUR OWN CHOICE

APPROVED BY HER!

Had i been absent that day, or had she given me something to read or do, then i would have done it and taken the test. However, she gave me nothing. She told me nothing.

Wow... you seriously think that's a just reason? That wouldn't fly at my old highschool, and it most definately won't fly at my uni.

Seriously, if you're going to go into Engineering, you're gonna have to time manage and be on top of EVERYTHING, it's a lot of work, and lot of time management. If you can't handle it now, it's gonna be even more difficult in uni. Trust me, I know, I'm doing Engineering right now.

Again, it's your own responsibility to find out what's going in the class you missed, she's not there to spoon feed you and hold your hand every step of the way.

Umm no. I dont go off of honor roll for classes this easy.

Well going and finishing a project in another class with the teachers authorization seems to be as fool proof as humanly possible. I even have the note with her signiture to prove it.

I dont have a problem with time management. It was a hard program and i couldn't finish in the short period of time i was given (Neither could the rest of the class), so i asked permission to stay in that class and finish. I asked for the work and she didn't have any at that time.

At any rate, aside from this incident, she cannot teach. I cannot teach myself the material. If i wanted to do that i would have taken an independent study course. Something has to be done.

I already said that i asked for the work and she didn't have any prepared. As for the study guide on the second day, yes i could/should have gone and gotten it; but you cannot try to make me take the test without having seen ANY of the material.
