Because of you guys I looked into that Infocus X1 projector. Wow, I didn't know consumer projector had come this far! I'm definitely interested in getting one to put downstairs for DVD movie viewing. I've read bunch of reviews on the unit tonight and it sounds very cool. Sam's Club has Infocus 4800 w/ screen for $1189 so I think I'll swing by Sams tomorrow and pickup a unit. If anything it sounds like fun toy to play around with. Thanks to Luthien and noodlessnoop for introducing to the gadget. I'll let you know of my impression once I get the unit and test it out. I've a decent Sony 55' bigscreen I can compare it to.

Forget those old rear projection TVs. Forget those uber expensive DLPs. The answer is Rear Projection LCDs! They cost $1000 less than DLPs, and are as clear and sharp as DLPs. They have awesome viewing angles, and are far brighter than conventional RPTVs. The only downfall they have is that the blacks aren't very black, which when I watched it, I didn't even notice it until I compared it with another TV. But everything else is awesome.
I'm surprised no one mentioned RPLCDs

There is an element of personal taste envolved, some people don't like anything that isn't like their old TV. I bought my first front projector 25 years ago, and very much prefer the natural non cartoon image (typical tv exaggerates color and compresses grey levels). Front projection is much more theatrical, like seeing a movie instead of watching tv.

I put my screen permanently on the wall, and put up curtains and I could draw over it just like it was a window.

I ordered the Infocus X1 projector for $832 AR. I decided against the 4800 from Sams since it's basically the same unit and it cost more $400 more with taxes. I've been doing lot of reading over at AVSforum and decided to paint one of my wall in the basement w/ Behr Silverscreen paint. Luckily I've a cousin who's a professional painting contractor and he's bring over his spray machine and spray painting my wall for me. I've ordered the component to svideo adaptor and component to vga adaptor from Infocus so I should be set. This is my first front projector so I'm real excited. I never really thought about having my own theater room until I read this thread and read the great info over at AVSforum.

When's the last time you checked out DLPs? They are the same price as LCD projection now, or within $200 or so... for example at CC this week.... Samsung 43" DLP = $2699.... Sony LCD Projection = $2799
