Need advice on setting up website......

Sorry for the double post. I am new to this and need some advice. My boss would like to set up a website and instead of using our e-mail web-hosting site, he would like to set it up on a server onsite. What would be needed to accomplish this? Hardware wise, we are currently using a peer-to-peer network with one staton as the file server and one station as the dsl internet connection. We use W2000. Any ideas on the cost and logistigs? the cheap and not so easy to is to use a p133 (or better) with 32megs of ram (or more) and a 1gb+ harddrive. install your favorite flavor of bsd or linux, then add apache, php, perl, mysql and openssl. probably want to toss webmin on there so you can administer remotely.

if unix (or it's clones) ain't you cup of tea, then costs are going to go up, quickly. in my opinion a bare minimum windows 2000 web server would be a pII 400, 256 megs of ram, and a 4gb harddrive. windows 2000 server will cost you several hundred $$$, you will need to buy enough client access licenses to cover the amount of connections you will have.

it's cheaper to with a webhost, like HostCabin.com or ReadyHosting.com. if you do go with a webhost, you'll want to make sure you backup the website to tape/CD/etc. at your office since not all webhosts have good backup strategies.

Thanks, that does help alot. I need to research apache and the other software you recommended. If we go with a W2K server, what exactly does it mean by "client access licenses"? Sorry to be such a newbie, but I would like to understand more fully. Thanks again, Alan
