Okay, I have a confession to make: I'm somewhat that kind of woman you described there, but I do not by any means have any kids.
Basically, when she requests space, give it to her. She's thinking, that's all . . . thinking. She's afraid of something. Show interest in knowing what it is that is bothering her, or what it is she is thinking.
If you are a fast pace person though, it will never work. You two are incompatible in that sense, as it is less likely to work. But if you're a patient person willing to wait, then relax, give her breathing space and show her that you're actually worth it.
Again, you seem to be rushing things. Rushing things with a woman of that nature won't work and it'll suffocate her. So, find somewhere and someone else if you aren't willing to be patient.
The mixed feeling thing is for real . . . really.
