I'm looking for recommendations on a <$500 laser printer. It will replace a all-in-one color inkjet printer (HP C6280) being used by our receptionist. The main complaint was that it would jam frequently with anything other than plain 8.5x11 paper.

I generally abhor all-in-one printers and I may be able to steer them away from getting another one. I'm looking for a few recommendations for single function B&W laser printers as well as perhaps a well regarded B&W all-in-one printer.

Preferably, these recommendations will have most, if not all of the following qualities:

1) Quick warm up and printing.
2) Handles printing stacks of envelopes reliably without jamming.
3) Handles thicker papers reliably.
4) Cheap upkeep costs.
5) Networkable.

Unfortunately it can't be a Dell. I was looking at Dell 2330's, however our reseller doesn't supply Dells.

Can't speak to the envelopes bit, and it's color, but I've absolutely loved my Samsung CLP 620ND so far.

It's networkable and runs through my usual 24-pound paper just fine by default and card stock too as long as you remember to set the paper type in the printer preferences before printing. It definitely warms up quickly and IIRC the basic toner carts are rated for 2,500 pages while the "high capacity" are rated for 5,000 pages, the latter run about $100/each. The transfer belt is rated for 50,000 pages and I believe the fuser is rated for 100,000 pages. I picked mine up for under $299, but they usually run about $399.

What I've really loved so far however is the built-in duplexer, that's a definite paper-saver when I just need a draft copy to show someone for feedback.

I know it's just one machine and therefore not a scientific sample size, but based on my experiences with it, I would encourage you to look at the offerings from Samsung. Many of Samsung's MFC offerings share the same print engines as their printers, so the good quality in the printers should carry over if your co-workers stick to their desire for an MFC.

At my office, I have 3 business HP's and 1 Lexmark e260dn. The LExamrk is the cheapest and meets all of your criteria. I'd get that.
