http://www.84silver.com/contest_browse_view.php?entry_id=NDAz <--- liked this one the best. The others were a bit too colorful, and looked too much like cloth or something.

And I believe it's a mistake to have a kid at that age to ask for assistance for the AT effect. First off, AT is pretty brutal, and I'm sure, if you haven't already, recieved harsh criticism for your design.

I'm going to refrain from commenting on yours, but be wary that out there, only a mixture of born-talent, hard work and effort, and a huge drive will get you to win anything at all (aside from those lottery-type drawings of course). It doesn't matter if you're a good kid or a cool kid to people.

Take in these criticisms and improve yourself instead of being offended by it.

Anyways, good luck. BTW, I never had to use a graphing calculator until calculus (still really never had to use it, but I programmed little things in it so i could finish calc homework a lot faster). I used a stupid $5 calculator 'till calculus, lol.

And you can get those older TI-83's on ebay for pretty cheap now anyways. Get a beater calculator until you take a class where you can actually use it (for classes that uses extensive amount of statistical calculations, Ti-83 is a MUST. saved HOURS/DAYS in college using the stat functions of TI-83). If you really intend on getting one, then you sure as hell better make sure how to make your own little progs/scripts. If not, then the calculator is no better than a scientific calculator to you. I am willing to bet there's a ton of people here w/ a graphing calculator that they can just give away, me included.

doing by hand, always, is the best way to learn anyways.

Slide rule through college - worked fine - just more effort.

Andrew is an awesome person despite his youth, he hangs out with a bunch of us old crusty contest entering types and he's very cool, very helpful person. A lot of his interests are in line with AnandTech so I thought I'd invite him to join our community

Believe I take all criticism in stride. I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It is fine if you think my design is not good/bad.

It actually did take me a while to come up with design. I thought it was pretty good when I submitted it. I am not the best at drawing/graphics designs especially with the tools that were given.

My teachers told me that I would need a graphing calculator for Algebra 2. Even if I don't really need it this year, I will be able to use it for years to come. I really like math and will be taking much higher math.

Again thank you all for the votes

I think a TI-30X IIS is fine for most things too, having taken Academic Decathlon math exams (topics up to differential calculus) where graphing calculators aren't allowed. However, the trend in education has for the past decade been to use technology seemingly just for the sake of using technology, so I have to have a TI-83 as well for various textbook "graphing calculator exercises."

I voted.

That's fvcking messed up. :|

while crude... the kid could have at least put a lil more effort into his design then simply being a picture of himself, if he really wanted to earn a free calculator.

Truth. I understand it may be good intentions, but I have a feeling he/his family would have no trouble purchasing him a calculator. The paintings done by dolphins at the aquarium have more talent and effort put into them.

Try to buy an 89 though. That'll guarantee you an A+ in algebra, trig, and calculus. The Solve, Factor, Integrate, and Diffrentiate functions are all you need to get by. Plus it recognizes trig identities. If you get the 84, sell it and get an 89 instead .
