Need best AGP card for running Quake 4

I don't game much anymore, but when i do it's always quake 3 or Doom 3, and I have quake 4 on the way.

I want to stick with agp as to avoid upgrading everything. I'm afraid my Radeon 9800 might not have the juice needed for running quake 4.

So, unless somebody can direct me to something better for this particular game, i'll start shopping for the 6800gt (a 6800 ultra isn't necessary; needs a 425 watt power supply that i'm not about to invest in).

Compare it to this. I have a radeon x800xt and play quake 4 at 1600 by 1200 2xaa all settings high, not ultra. Graphics are amazing. I get 10-40 fps. Yes, 10 fps sometimes, but thats mostly in like 1-3 minute sections in the singleplayer. Multiplayer is fine with fps. I would recommend a 6800gt for qauke 4. Remember the 6 series nvidia cards almost clobbers the x800 series, in the doom 3 engine, and mine does quite well. Im porud with it, and i think you will be very proud of the fps in quake 4 with a 6800gt.

I have the game ( Quake 4 ). I have the card ( 6800GT ). I have not had the time to install it. Maybe this weekend.

I played Quake 4 (for about an hour)on my 6800GT and it looked and ran fine 30-50 FPS. Too bad (in my opinion) the gameplay was ass.

a 6800GT will play Quake 4 fine...I run one with an Athlon64 Venice Core and 2 gigs of RAM and play it at 1280 x 1024 at high quality and 4x AA, and it's a pretty site to behold. Given a decent processor and at least a gig od RAM you should be fine with a 6800GT.

jonesthewine, what is your processor speed? (break it down to me in x000+ terms as I don't know how to compare actual frequency of AMDs to Intels).

Just FYI Venice cores range (IIRC) from 3000+ to 3500+.

It's a 3000+ overclocked from 200MHz to 260MHz FSB with a 9x multiplier; probably equivalent to a 3.5-3.8 GHz Pentium 4.

I played Quake 4 on my 6800GT @ 1280x960 with some AA and 16x AF, it never chugged or stuttered.
