Get put out, the worst mistake of your life will be to go cheap on getting these things removed. (think of it as a fun legal drug dosage. Being put out is really pretty nice)

I didn't find it fun, but rather dull. Just like being asleep, and when I woke up, I would have been perfectly fine to drive home. Vicodin also apparently has no effect on me.

Lucky (or unlucky) you. When I came out of anesthesia I felt like I needed to hold on to something to keep from falling off the earth. Two nurses had to help me walk to the recovery room about ten feet away because I was pretty much a zombie.

I got gypped!

Apparently. Too bad you didn't get to experience the full wonders of Vicodin. Let's just say that the week after I got my wisdom teeth out was a funny week full of milkshakes and cartoon watching.

i was not completely knocked out when i got mine out. the doc didn't want me to be fully under because i have asthma and she said the risk just wasn't worth it, but i was partially under. i would doze in and out and i couldn't really feel any pain when i came back in before i'd quickly go out, but i did feel the vibration and sounds of them grinding my tooth up.

it wasn't painful at all or anything during the process and it honestly felt like a dream the way i was going in and out of it.

IV sedation is the way to go.
It is not so much the pain while they are doing it that is the issue for me. Its all the sounds in your head of the teeth cracking, the tools , etc.
If your at all squeamish around things like drawing blood, or hospitals, then I would definitely do sedation.

I had two growing sideways and only got local (they took out all four). The sound was kind of gross, and the pressure was kind of crazy (the dentist actually put his foot on the chair to get extra leverage  ) but I'd rather just get local and be on my way after rather than deal with being put under.

KT

Edit: I kind of like pain though, so if you don't, you may want to go under.

EDIT: Mine weren't impacted or any of that jazz.

I got mine out in Navy boot camp. Nuthin' but Novocain. The best part is being able to her the grinding and popping! Those are memories that will last a lifetime.

I just had all 4 out this past Monday, and I opted for just the local anesthesia due to the fact that the general was going to cost me ~$600 out of pocket. My bottom 2 were only partially impacted and didn't require much more than a bunch of pulling and twisting...the top 2 came out without much issue at all.

Then again I did take 2 Xanax on an empty stomach about an hour before the procedure, so that chilled me out a good bit. Other than that I didn't feel much of anything past the novocaine injections. I also brought my ipod and kept one headphone in and the volume cranked on some pretty angry music! I kept one side out just incase I happened to hear an "Oh shit!" or something along those lines!

I had sideways ass teeth like those, they had to break them to take them out. My face looked, and felt like I'd been hit by a truck (and I was knocked out). Listen to the good doctors, take the juice, wake up when it's over and enjoy the loopyness....and then cry when the pain sets in a day later.

No brainer, get it. This shit will hurt. Had to have top and bottom done and even afterwards it hurt. Plus they're gonna be literally taking a drill to your mouth.

I don't know if they would even do it with you like that b/c of the chance that you'd move and they'd drill into your brain.

Anesthesiologists are the most highly insured MDs against malpractice liability for a good reason, they kill and injure more people than any other MD. Anesthetizing someone with chemicals is like trying to hit someone over the head with a rock just hard enough to knock them out without killing them. Most oral surgeons do not employ true anesthesiologists, but do this part themselves. Less experience = more risk in an already risky situation.

If you can avoid being "put under" for any surgery, you should seriously consider it for the safety reasons alone.

I had all four removed on Novocaine alone, plus three of them shattered in the forceps, and had to have the roots drilled out. It's no big deal though. You can't feel any of it on Novocaine. They mostly just put you under for their benefit; it means they won't have to deal with moving patients. The true pain of wisdom teeth comes after they are out.

So, I think you should just man up. It's really not that bad anyway.
I'm not sure where you get your figures from. Anesthesiologists do pay a lot in malpractice but I don't think it's the highest. OB/GYN is getting really bad. Anesthesiologists do make the best average money though according to the US Census.

"They kill and injure more people then any other MD"? Where'd you get that from? I mean, it may be true but that's a natural effect of their position.

Anesthesia is much more complex then you make it sound. Putting someone under is easy. It's the balance they must perform to keep the patient stable when the surgeons are doing whatever where the real challenge lies. Of course, this is usually with very sick individuals who aren't going to tolerate sedation and surgery too well either. It's not uncommon for a n anesthesiologists has to compensate for a less then spectacular surgeon who is making the job much harder.

Anyways, this discussion is probably not needed for a wisdom tooth removal. It's very uncommon now for dentist to opt for general sedation. Many like, my DDS won't even do it ever. Most opt for local using better local techniques and placement near key nerve trunks. Few cases ever need deep sedation.

I just had a double extraction resembling yours. Took several injections but it did the job on what was described as one of the most difficult he has ever had to do. Make sure you get good treatment and proper aftercare (peroxide mouthwash, antibiotics). Don't mess around because bad dental work can make you very sick, if not dead!

I see people complaining about the cost. If your willing to spend that money on hardware or a new tv then spend it on yourself first. Your worth it !

6 teeth at once? Holy crap. Are you sick of pudding and jello?

I just had all my teeth removed about a month ago. I'm only 36. I was in a car accident where my mouth impacted around the steering wheel. It was remove them all or have a partial for the front, bottom , then a few teeth missing on each side, which could still cause problems later. I just said screw it, after all the pain they caused me after the accident, I rather just do dentures . Will look better than my old teeth anyway.

Currently eating yogurt, cereal (let it get soggy), and things like spaghetti and lasagna lately now that my gums have healed.

Anesthesia as in to knock you out? While I personally would prefer anesthesia, it won't hurt if you just use the numbing agent. I had a tooth pulled when I was 7 and only had the numbing agent..... It didn't hurt, but it wasn't pleasant either. Lots of cranking and yanking.

You're comparing a baby tooth to the largest and hardest to reach permanent tooth (and in this situation it's turned sideways). That's like saying he shouldn't need anesthesia to amputate his foot because you stubbed your toe once.

If you can't feel anything at all, what the hell does it matter if you're getting every damn tooth pulled?

I guess it doesn't but do you really want to hear them ripping, pulling and cutting into your mouth?

Had my wiz out last year. General IV, man that stuff rocked. Didn't feel a thing, and in fact fell back to sleep after the woke me the first time apparently. Best nap ever.

I will definitely say, opt NOT for local. My face generally hurts way more from the topical & injection than the cavity/filling itself. Plus, I've had 2 fillings where they didn't do any sort of numbing whatsoever. I know what it feels like, and it don't feel good. I was doing great on just advil after the general wore off for my wisdom teeth.

Good grief, one is nearly completely sideways. GET KNOCKED OUT!

Mine were growing in at all funky angles, and I was out like a light. I just remember them tapping my arm to find a vein, the needle going in... and then me waking up in a recovery room and wheeling me out in a wheelchair.

Even better, and why I remember this, I have no idea:

My parents were in the waiting room. The procedure took about an hour and a half. My mom was freaked out beyond belief that I was going under, when I thought it was no big deal, because I couldn't stand the pain any longer. When I come out of the recovery room into the waiting room, first thing I hear is my mom saying in Chinese "husband, why is she so green?!?!"

I remember getting into the car, but I do not remember getting out of the car... or going in the house or up the stairs, but I remember climbing into bed. And I think I was out most of the day.

Puffiness gone in two days.

mine were like that and i didn't get knocked out. i was only 18 and it would've cost an extra $300, so i just had local. let me tell you how it goes. first they cut it open, then start using a mini chisel and hammer to break it up. then they use a mini crowbar looking thing to pry it out. they also use pliers to take the bits out. if you think you can handle that, then get the local. it's not fun.

Yeah, my issue with dentists stems from getting a few fillings at the age of 6-7 with no numbing. Huzzah for military dentists!
(To be fair, the military dentists I visited while I was enlisted did good work)
