I had my wisdom teeth removed with absolutely zero chemical aids. Was freaking horrible beyond belief.

I opted for local anesthetic for extraction of four wisdom teef. Oddly, I declined nitrous oxide for no particular reason. There was no entertainment for distraction so "zenning out" was all that could be done. I do not fear such procedures and the pain was bearable but as said the tugging and twisting and so forth was enough to make me break out in a cold sweat. I think it was more uncomfortable than painful.

I do not see the benefit of paying more and increasing the risk with general anesthesia unless anxiety would be so great as to intefere with the procedure.

had oral surgeon take out 3 wisdom teeth. I was only on painkillers and awake the whole time. After an hour or so, it was done and I was up and around after a few hrs.

Mine were impacted about the same as the OP's and it took them a couple hours.

Screw that. I don't know how people put up with a wisdom tooth extraction with no anesthetics. I have a high pain threshold but DAM. How did they hold you still?

Hell yes do anesthesia.

The first time I did the top two I didn't and really wish I did.

The second time I had the bottom two removed had it, such a better experience.

Got my wisdom teeth out yesterday, IV and went under. Completely painless - just slept and recovering just fine at home now.
All in, cost about $150 or so thanks to medical coverage.

Novocaine is fine. I had 3 pulled out in college when I had no insurance for $200.

Yep. I had one removed under local anesthesia. Took 45 minutes and was terrible. Didn't hurt so much, just severe pressure and crunching. Kind of nauseating.....<barf>.

Edit: Bad day...meant to say local, not general.

i just had mine removed. It looks like yours are impacted, like mine were. Due to this fact, medical insurance covered my operation.

got out of the chair and drove home
never had any pain
the only bad part was the constant bleeding for a couple days

I had all four wisdom teeth out in one session with local + laughing gas + a sedative pill (the surgeon's idea, not mine). I had the option of general anesthesia but am phobic of trying it. Having the teeth out was not a big deal to me, but I generally am a good sport when it comes to putting up with dental work and the teeth weren't impacted too badly. I slept through most of it since the sedative made me higher than a kite. If you go with a local, you might try asking for a sedative pill if you want to be really out of it.

Did you mean to say local? I don't think you would feel or hear anything if it were general.

I didn't get general anesthesia, just the local one where they shoot the numbing stuff in your gums, but my teeth weren't growing sideways.

However, one tooth did have a bit of a hook in the root so they had to use stitches. Still didn't need any sort of pain killers afterward. Bled for a few hours. I may just have a greater tolerance to pain.

I had local anesthesia and a sedative. I could have gone without the second, but you better be on crack or ODing on opium if you are doing it without anesthesia. One of my wisdom teeth came out in 2 chunks...

Edit: Bothered to look at X-ray. Holy impacted Batman! Mines were all pointed up and could be clamped. Looks like yours have to be cut out. Please pay for the drugs. And nice gold incisor.

I've had all four taken out, two at the same time and the others on separate occasions. Never once did they put me out. By the second trip I had got use to the sound, pops, cracks, blood, etc.

When I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed years ago, they used anesthetic to put me completely under. They had to drill into my jaw bones to get the teeth out though, so simple pain killers weren't really an option.

I only had my left bottom one removed because it impacted and became infected. I did not use general anesthesia just a local but, before I went in I took two Valium and a percocet. The only part that hurt was when the dentist sewing up my gum. He pinched my lower lip with the forceps.:Q
