Nice little sedan with sporty looks, good performance and super fuel economy (40+ MPG highway)

We`ve have a 2005 model and have put over 60K on it and no problems or complaints but sure does go a long way on a gallon of gas...

I think they stopped making that model for 08 and finding that in an 07 may be hard now.....

Wouldn't be a good choice for me... nothing against miata's though

Corolla is a great choice, but its exterior appearance just doesn't cut it for me.

Honda Fit is the best choice

I guess I'll have to test drive one... they are a little expensive for the power they have though, it seems.

I'm sorry to sound like a picky bastard; I really appreciate the help.

Toyota Yaris? Before I get flamed too badly, I think it looks better than many Toyotas. Gets better mileage and has more jump than a Fit; cheaper too. The Fit will run circles around it when it comes to hard cornering though.

I don't really like Yaris's, but whatever floats your boat

Might be a good idea. You can pick up a used one for dirt cheap since it's domestic, and the Focuses (Foci?) got fairly reliable after that initial slew of recalls. Plus it's a hatch, which is pretty convenient in many circumstances.

Civic (BLEHHHH)
Sentra 2.0S (140hp MR20 w/ CVT)
Subaru impreza 2.5i (awd 173hp)

In the end, test drive them all. I would go after something brand new in this price range. btw are you looking for auto or manual?

definitely manual. most attractive suggestions so far might be Mazda 3 hatchback. thing is, I think they are ugly. I'm not sure if you said (BLEHHHH) to the Civic because of looks, or because they are boring to drive, but I really like how the latest Civics look (yeah, I know, you probably are thinking I have strange/bad taste).

I wouldn't stray away from a great choice just because of looks, but it definitely is something to think about (for me). Actually, I take that back, I will not get a Cobalt.

The thing about the 3 hatch is that it actually has a very small trunk compared to, lets say a VW rabbit. i did not find this out until i actually bought it. I tried putting a chair in the trunk without teh seats down. It almost didnt fit. I had no problem with fittign this chair into my 01 Altima and my old Eclipse.
