Need career advice from the IT people here

i thought you were referring to sharepoint administration.... because yes that is easy.... LOL...

It depends on what you define as "administration." Creating a site from templates isn't hard, for example. Deciding where to place new applications based on web application configuration/load, search administration/topology/troubleshooting, and frankly, any troubleshooting in Sharepoint is a major PITA.

If you're "lucky" like me, you get to do architecture, development, AND administration in SP because you were the only person dumb enough to volunteer to do it full time. I am still kicking myself in the ass for that decision.

I enjoy troubleshooting annoying problems with switches, routers, servers etc.... if that makes sense...... I handle literally everything but SP now....

All the Virtual Machines, switches, routers,..... supporting a rather LARGE govt client... yet these fuckers dont want to hire more people...... they want me to fail at my job

Psh, you aren't thinking big enough. A back door VPN to a machine with a couple of serial cables into cores and you can get most things back up.

BigFix ? IBM can ruin any product that's for sure.

yeah i worked for bigfix. i left after 1 year at ibm . i wrote a lot of components for add on packs.

honestly , from what i've heard from the guys who are still there (and a lot of guys honestly just got bored , we were all in our late 20s early 30s and well enterprise software isn't exactly that exciting ) ibm has left them at least a decent amount of freedom to try a few new things. generaly i think they will run them into the ground (just like the original tivoli) , and just buy another startup.

so is the world of large software companies.

I do desktop support and is making 85k
They even gave me a fancy title "system analyst"

you can make a ton of money in many areas of this field doing just depends on the place and how good you are at crawling your way to a good spot. i used to have to call a lot of client companies when i was working to help develop new tools / features for like admin consoles. so i remember once calling a large wall street bank for a conference call. im making diddly to write their future av tools and it turns out they have guys whose entire jobs were just to say login to a symantec management console, run a bunch of AV tasks and grab all the results and send them to their superiors.

so they'd have a guy that did just that for spyware/adware, a guy who just managed domain trees, a guy who just did security audits for sox etc. these guys hated that companies were making all in 1 admin tools to replace all their jobs with just one guy since i heard they were all making $125k +....

don't get me started on software QA people.... write a test script in english, execute on website, and write really poorly described defects. get paid $80k -130k
