im building a cheap 800 dollar pc for someone, and havent really ben following the overclocking results of the low end core 2 duo's, i was wondering which low end cpu from intel would overclock to around 3ghz, and be good for gaming & stuff.

edit: ALSO, what would be a good cheap motherboard to bring this cpu to at least 3ghz? Thanks!

No-name PSU can be a hit or miss. I have no problem running my C2D rig at 3.46GHz with any FREE AR Ultra PSU (400 to 600 rated). Same with my Antec SP350.

Yup, benched one last weekend. Still have the board in the garage since the owner was out of town till next week. I didn't expect any improvement over the IP35-E because both boards share the same core power section. I couldn't test overclocking above 488MHz FSB because my E6320 hits a FSB wall @ 495MHz.

IP35 Pro had dismal performance @ the 1394 port. Tested both on-board headers. Same 14.4MB/s with my external HDD. This same ext HDD was good up to 31.7MB/s with USB 2.0.

The biggest insult was the inability of the Pro to control a 2-pin fan. The much cheaper IP35-E works great with any DC fan...2-pin, 3-pin, or 4-pin PWM. I also had to reset the Pro's BIOS several times during testing. Even downloaded various BETA BIOS which include a 1T mode for RAM. No change. Didn't have to do this with the IP35-E.

Finally, windows would show an uninstalled hardware in Device Manager if you don't install the Pro's GURU management software. GURU permits real-time manipulation of some BIOS parameters in windows.

The Abit IP35 Pro is a fair value when compared against Asus or Gigabyte's offerings. The Pro appears to be very pricey when pitted against the IP35-E.

uh oh. I'm mainly using it for oc'ing. I don't have any external hd's or care much about uninstalled hardware in device mgr, so if I get a good oc on my e6750 I'll be happy.

430watts, 20a on each rail...seems good.

absolutely not - especially if you plan to OC; the PS is the LAST place you want to be cheap ... 8800GTS need a minimum of ~450w; 500w for HD2900xt. Check Hot Deals, there were some great PS deals floating around.

and check my sig for a successful budget rig ... actually my $114 e4300 is now at 3150Mhz at stock voltage. If you don't need sli or xfire, you can save a lot on the MB.

Then none of the Abit IP35 series board will present a bottleneck to your CPU.

E4300 doens;t have a great chance for over 3 ghz. I couldn;t get over 2.9 and not many here have gotten over 3 stable. The same system, just popped out the cpu and put in a Q6600, was stable for 5 days at 3.2, and is still stable at 3.1, so it sure wasn;t anything else in the system. Both of my 6400's and all 3 of my 6300's are over 3.2

Could be issue with latest E4300. All five of my E4300s had L2 stepping with 1/07 build date. Worst chip managed to hit 3.24GHz at 1.5Vcore. Best chip...3.59GHz/1.5Vcore. It will go higher with more Vcore, but my Big Typhoon cannot keep up with the extra heat output.

Mine is an older 4300, and most here had the same experience, not able to go over 3 full load 24/7 stable.

Then the root cause is probably stepping. You want to see SL9Tx on the box or the chip. CPUz will also identify the chip with L2 stepping. These E4300s will normally top out around 425MHz FSB.

Some "L2" E4300s are also set up at the factory with 100C Tjunction. These chips runs about 14C hotter than an 85C rated Tjunction.

Don;t say I didn';t warn you. If you don;t get over 3 ghz on that 4400

I was originally planning to get a q6600 and I heard that the ip35 pro is one of the best for overclocking a quad core, so hopefully I'll get 3.8+ out of the e6750 and then 3.8 + on a penryn quad core at some future point in time.

alright, i think im gonna order an e4400, since the 4300's arent in stock on the egg.

I think you'll have a 75% chance of hitting +3.0GHz with the E4400. Get the Abit IP35-E and PM me if you need help with BIOS configuration.

DO NOT go cheap on RAM. I recommend these Kingston ValueRAM with "N5" code in the part number.

Why would somebody spend $115 on value ram pc6400 2x1 gb when you could spend a similar amount for 2x1 gb name brand pc8500? Or, alternatively, you could get 4-4-4-12 pc6400 instead.

3.8 may be a little too optimistic on air with any C2D. You could probably boot into windows with +1.55Vcore, but the system will not be stable. Intel's new 45nm chips should run cooler...4GHz is within reach with a good chip.
