I have a Dell 400sc running Windows XP. It has been running fine for a number of years (P4 3.0 ghz, 1gb RAM, XP SP3). A few months back the onboard NIC failed but that is about the only big issue I have had.
Yesterday I went to add a SATA HDD, and when I went to reboot I started getting a number of different errors during the initial boot up sequence.
Sometimes a complete blank screen
Sometimes get past the initial boot phase, where it gives you the option to go to boot menu or to system settings
A variety of error messages such as checkpoint math, PnP6, checkpoint poke, check point shut, and flashes the screen and bleeps with a messages saying to contact dell support
Sometimes a freeze when it says Windows did not shut down properly and did I want to boot to safe mode (freezes during the clock countdown).
I have unseated and reseated all components. I finally got the machine to boot, and if I go from the Windows menu and click Shutdown -> Restart it reboots perfectly every time. I have also left it up and running overnight and it was fine and even wakes from suspend mode. But if I just shut down from the menu, then hit the front buttom to restart I get some sort of error. By unplugging the power and waiting I can usually get it to restart (after 30 minutes or more).
I am thinking this is a motherboard issue but it seems strange. Any help is appreciated.
