At this point, you might as well buy a new hard drive, install Windows from scratch, then hook this drive up as a slave and start copying over as many files as you can. Sounds like it's just read errors, you should be able to copy most files over rather easily.

Why does he need a new hard drive? The 'unrecoverable problems' could refer to NTFS errors that cannot be fixed, and a reformat will address that. The partition's out the window though, I suspect.

I'm assuming he wants to try and recover files before formatting? I guess if he gives up on the partition, he can blow it away and start new. I still suspect he's going to find some bad sectors.

Alright made some progress, reformatted the one of the drives as it wasn't too important to recover data there but my original drive (the one that started it all) is still out and I am desperately trying not to lose the data on it.

So I was able to set it up as a slave the the reformated drive. When I try to access it in Windows Explorer, it says the drive is not formatted and asks if I want to. I've tried right clicking, it and running scan disk but nothing happens. Any ideas now?

Is it possible I screwed things up worse when I ran FIXBOOT/FIXMBR on it earlier? I would be satisfied if I could at least access my drive and copy over everything and reformat as necessary but I can't even access it right now...

Things are looking much better!

Used TestDisk to fix my partitions and now the drive is shows up with all my data. Currently in the process of running AVG and SpyBot on the hard drive. Hopefully I can get it bootable soon.

After all of this...I think I am going to buy an external hard drive and make weekly/monthly copies of my data.

Thanks all for your help...
