Need fan replacement for old card (4850)

Hi all. Bit of a boring question about an old graphics card. I've got an old Asus Radeon 4850 that seems to have a failing fan.
It spins, sort of, but does not sound healthy. The spin speed also seems very low. I tried enabling manual fan control and cranking it up, but the fan itself did not change speed.

So it would seem that the fan is failing. Does anyone know of replacement fan I can get for this type of card? The actual model is shown in the link below:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121278

If I can't get a replacement, I suppose I can always cable tie an old case fan (80mm) up next to the heatsink and hope for the best

I'd rather not buy an aftermarket cooler, as this card is not in my main rig, it doesn't really seem worth the cost.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance

I do not believe you can replace just the fan, you would have to go with a aftermarket heatsink. And for such a low cost card i would not waste the money. Just spend $50 on a new 4850 or spend more for a upgrade.

I would contact asus first. If not try eBay for a heatsink/fan that would fit that board.
And lastly just buy a new card and sell this one with it pointed out has a bad fan.

How long ago did you buy it? Seems to have a 3 year warranty.

If they can't replace it same-for-same, they could offer a very cheap (or free) upgrade.

Great suggestions. Always check and see what the manufacturer is willing to do for you before spending time/money. If they won't do anything for less than significant cost (say ~$15), I'd just put a new fan on it yourself. It's not worth it to spend a lot of money on an old card.

For modding suggestions: you could cut the frame off a case fan and epoxy the hub to the center of that heatsink or just remove the stock fan and position a case fan in your case to blow on the now fanless heatsink. Or you could zip tie a case fan to the heatsink. Basically, just find some way to move a decent amount of air across the heatsink and you should be good. Use GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner to monitor temps and confirm that your crafting worked .

I used to have this card, just put a 92 or 120mm fan on it will do, use zip ties or something to fasten it on. I bet a 120mm or a pair if you can manage will cool way better than the original.

This is a good idea. I just did this yesterday with an EVGA 9800 GT I bought used (found an old thread on here that suggested this "mod"). The stock fan worked fine, but it was loud, so I twist-tied on a Gentletyphoon 1150 that I had in my spare parts box... it now runs silently and a few degrees cooler.

Have you tried cleaning and re-lubricating the fan spindle/bearings? Silicone grease works well for this. You might need some non-permanent adhesive to reattach the fan's label, if you have to peel it off to gain access to the fan's internals.

I have the very same card (until I swapped it for HD5870). I still have the 4850, and the fan is running OK, but could not keep pace to cool the core when the action is heavy (even w/ fan at 100%, and loud!)

I have been thinking about it what to do with it. The ASUS OEM heat sink/cooling vane seems to be made of copper, so theoretically you just need a good fan to cool the whole thing. I havent' taken the plastic top off just yet, but I'd imaging strapping a 120mm fan on top would do something. I'm not sure how the card controls fan speed, unless there's a connector, you may have to manually set the fan speed.
