Does anyone know of a good DVD Drive (Brand,Model) that has fast ripping speeds to rip DVD's? I want to make backup copies of some DVDs for my 4 year old which likes to put the DVDs in the player himself and hes not to to fragile with them.

I have a Pioneer DVD burner which only rips at 2X and I have a Aopen DVD drive that use to rip at 10X+ but seems to rip very slow now days!

Thanks!

I believe you can get firmware updates for your burner that will allow you to rip faster.. if not, any dvd-rom should do the trick.. maybe liteon?

I just D/L the lastest firmware for the 105 (133b) I think it supports more DVD brands but didnt think firmwares improved the ripping speeds, unless you get a hacked firmware? I read up on this months ago but seen many differant results being good/bad and backed out at the time.

I think I might flash the firmware but seen you couldnt go back if problems is the other thing that worries me.
Also most of my drives are Lite-On but of course the DVD Drives arent so I was hoping some one could post a good Lite-On DVD Drive for ripping unless a firmware would do the trick.

Thanks!

Yeah, the Liteon that I have in my Dell at work is insanely fast. I've never owned a Liteon before, but I'm hooked now. Upgraded my old Sony 2.4X DVD+R to a 4X Liteon on the BB deal @ ~ $80 last week and I'm loving it

I know what you mean about making the backup's. They're a lifesaver!

LiteOn (and many other brands) cripple the drive in the firmware so rip speed of DVD movies will never top 4x...

My Liteon at work has no problems ripping at over 10MB/sec, haven't paid attention to the burner I just got at home... I'm too lazy to look up what 10MB/sec is as far as DVD drive speed is concerned, but it's pretty good IMO...

You have to get a hacked firmware if you want your Pioneer to rip at > 2x. I applied it to my 105 and haven't had any problems with it at all. Lets you rip at up to about 12x towards the end of the DVD.

Yeah, I had an old LiteOn LTD163 that would rip at ~12x, but I flashed a new BIOS and it dropped to 4x speed. I flashed the old BIOS into it and it STILL would only read at 4x!! I sure felt ripped off...:frown:

Did the same here with my 105 and it rips a lot quicker now. The new firmware will rip up to 12X and also allows you to burn at 2X with some of the cheaper disks.
Go here Gradius or here Nil for the firmware and some other stuff.

Ginfest,

Yea I D/L the Gradius firmware for my drive but still only rips at 2X. Other then that the fireware seem to ok. It also always 2X on the generic DVDs which only burned at 1X before the flash.

I, too, am looking for a DVD drive (ROM drive, not burner) that rips fast. Does anyone have decrypting experience with such a drive, and have a name and model number of such a drive that I can buy off the shelf without having to do any firmware hack?

I use a Samsung SD-616 DVD-ROM (pretty sure that's the model) On a single layer DVD I've seen it do 15x, on a dual-layer...more like 7 or 8. Keep that in mind, your speeds will drop on a dual-layer DVD
