I recommend this. This is going to be the next one I get.

If you don't like that one, here is a selection.

CZ's are very reliable and the best bang for your buck. (No pun intended)

be aware that the prices quoted here are wholesale prices for FFL holders only.there has been alot of pistols "thrown around" in this thread. I recently went shopping for a DA auto for my G/F. She is armed security for traffic court near our hometown.until this, she was carrying a Ruger GP-100 but the job is now requiring a DA auto.now the ruger was fine for her w/.38 specials, but the full load .357 might have been a little too much for her hands and wrist.I looked at a
LOT of autos (both new and used) 90 percent were out of the budget "$500" except fot the Ruger autos.I tried to talk her into the .40 or the .45, but she had shot my Barretta .40 and didnt like the feel in her hands or the kick, so she chose the Ruger KP95.if your budget is $500 AND you wife is going to shoot it, this is what I suggest

P.S. Ruger is offering a $40 mail-in rebate currently on this model

I guess it depends on your market, but I paid $479 brand new for my Glock 17, which is a top-flight pistol. The CZs are widely available locally for under $400, and are outstanding weapons. Respectfully, I think either of these is better than the Ruger.

the glock can be debateable, AND the prices (@ least around where I live) are STILL $100 higher than the stated budget. I've read in shooting mags that the glocks barrel wears out faster than its competitors (in an article I read back when glocks first came out in the late 80"s, things might have changed since then) as for the CZ's, I would have to agree to an extent, I own a CZ variant and am pleased w/it, however quality can change between manufactures, also I couldn't find a CZ variant (with the exception of a Springfield Armory and that was still out of the $500 limit)

I wouldn't say it's debatable. Chuck Taylor has fired hundreds of thousands of rounds through a Glock 17 without replacing the barrel (not to mention the cartoonish abuse the gun has suffered, including being frozen on a block of ice, buried in horse manure, and chained to a buoy in the North Sea for months at a stretch). Glocks are demonstrably the toughest, most reliable pistols available.

Sounds to me like your "CZ variant" is a Springfield XD model, which is based on the Croatian HD pistol, not the CZ. It is a nice pistol, but not really related to the sweet-shooting CZ.

Ah, sorry, I misread. I know the Baby Eagle, though I was unaware it had any family resemblence to the CZ. It looks totally different.

I used work at a gun range so im quite biased on guns and ammunitions...

I have a 9mm and like it. Its a Intratec TEC9... small gun about the size of your hand. 7 rnd clip and made for personal protection. But if i had to choose i'd take a .357 Mag over it. 9mm don't have a lot of take down power and is relativaly weak. It will kill but a .357 Mag will destroy whatever it his. .45's are nice too i've got my eye's on a Smith and Wesson Stainless Steel .45. Just gotta save up the cash to get it.

Oh, I do have some problems with the statement in bold. While a hot 9mm with a good bullet will do a lot of damage to its target, a low torso shot with it will not make you drop like a sack of potatos. It might eventually kill you, but it wont instantly incapacitate you. IIRC, the mid 1980's shotout that resulted in the FBI moving away from the 9mm involved one perp catching a couple 9mm's to the chest and continuing on his way. I could be mistaken anout that, but one thing it did prove is the the 9x19mm is not the best round to have in your pistol in a firefight. Now, the 9x23mm aint bad, but the 9x19mm is destinctly "ehh".

True, true. I think you are thinking of a Miami shootout in 1986 - one of the perps was shot something like 8 times with 9mm and did not go down, hence the FBI's move to 10mm as their standard issue round. Actually, I seem to recall that the Army was motivated to move from .38 Special (ballistically similar to 9mm auto) to .45 ACP around the turn of the century by virtue of the fact that the .38 was not exhibiting sufficient knockdown power in combat - this was why the 1911 was required to be in .45. 9mm can be a highly effective caliber with JHP bullets, but per the modern interpretations of the Geneva and Hague conventions, combat troops are required to use only FMJ ammo.

The army had issues in the Philippines, mostly with Moro tribesmen. They'd smoke up on opium, wrap themselves really tightly with bandages to the extent that it functioned like a full body tourniquet, and charge with machetes. Now, a 30-06 from a Springfield would kill them, but not fast enough. The 38 proved itself to be woefully underpowered for the job of stopping a charging man on drugs. There was an incident were an LT, who used to be on the Army competition pistol team, put 4 slugs into the heart/aorta of one Moro tribesman... the LT still got killed, by that same tribesman. Colt came out with the 45 ACP, and there isnt much a 45 cant knock over at close range. They might not die instantly, but knocking them on the ground is a big advantage, it slows them down (they have to figure out "why am I suddenly on the ground?", then get up, then get their bearing, and start charging again, allow you a lot of time to shoot them a couple more times), plus you have stick them to the ground with a bayonet, if necessary. That was the army solution.

The Marine solution: wrap a thick leather collar around your neck so the machete gets stuck in it.

Actually, I might end up getting both. I got a Walther P-99QA 9mm for my wife, and I'm not sure yet if I want to get a .357 mag for me or not. Its a nice shooter, and I'm fairly pleased with the accuracy. I spent $575 for it, so I went a little over the budget. I really don't care about knock-down power. We shoot a lot, and having a 7-round auto will be quite effective in the event that it was needed for personal protection.

As for the advice on the girl...I dunno. Move to Wisconsin? I guess I got lucky!
