need help about dual cores for gaming..

hello guys well ill be getting a new comp soon the comp will be for gaming.. and i wanted to purchase a single core cpu and in a year or so ill buy a dual core cpu when the prices drop... but someone told me that amd will stop making 939 sockets therefore i wont be able to buy a dual core cpu... and ill have to upgrade my memory, mobo, and the cpu to M2 and im not only buying a cpu im buying a full system
that costs alot so i wont be able to upgrade all of the stuff i mentioned above so is it true that amd will stop making dual core? so please help me it's important :< cause im gonna order the system 2morrow.

It is true that Socket 939 will be going away next year.

But it is not true that Dual Core will be discontinued, it will also go to Socket M2.

There'll probably still be Socket 939 Dual Core in the retail channel until the end of 2006, but it'll start getting rare pretty fast I'd imagine.

Well,

I just put together this system, a 4200+, last night. I'm pretty happy with it so far, and would recommend it.

But there are reports of some issues with games, and I did experience a little choppiness so far until I installed and used the X2 driver from AMD's website.

I'd say, personally, if you're willing to put up with some growing pains for Dual Cores and put minimal effort into getting your games to run, buy the Dual Core.

If you want completely hassal free gaming, go Single Core.

The speed difference is neglible right now.

Especially since it looks like they're generally supposed to be good OCers...

um, X2 cpu's for 939 aren't going to disappear. Heck, they still manufacture Socket A cpus.

If you're gonna do that, then don't go so expensive on this first one. I would advise a 3000+ Venice and a nice heatsink. You can run it at around 2.6GHz until the M2 goes mainstream, and then you can upgrade from there. Or, you can stick with 939 X2, which will be a LOT cheaper.

if you already have the money to go for the 4000+ SD and higher, why not just buy a 3800+ X2 with a nice heatsink and overclock it. Save yourself some time and just buy the X2 now and enjoy it. Seems stupid to just buy an expensive single core to wait a year then buy a dual core...
