need help/advice on setting up self hosted website

we (me and a friend) have registered a domain and are currently making a website, but we do not know how to host it. We have a computer at our disposal and a connection for it to use. What do we need on this computer, OS? special software? anything else? i really appreciate you guys helping me out, thanks!

How willing are you to learn? Linux and Apache are both free and stable if you already know or are willing to learn linux.

Red Hat (It is only one distribution, but it has a lot of support)


Apache also has a win32 version that I ran for a little while. It is fairly easy to set up initially. Other configuration may be a little more difficult.


Do you have a static IP that you are going to use? If not you will have to check into something like DNS 2 Go. Quite a few people use them without registered domain names (myname.dns2go.com or whatever), but I use them with my domain name and it works great.

Setup:

I setup nameservers with zoneedit.com. Point the domain to your computers ip. They have dynamic ip services available but I've never used them. Hopefully you have a static IP like me.

My registrar uses manage.opensrs.net for editing your domain. Ask them for your login and password and enter, or if they use some other system figure that out with them. You might just have to send them an e-mail with the new nameservers in it and ask them to change it for you. Change the nameservers to your two zoneedit nameservers (ie mine are ns3.zoneedit.com and ns5.zoneedit.com).

Setup all the stuff on your server depending on what kind of stuff you are running. I run a discussion board (PHPBB) and a homemade PHP photo gallery that I wrote.

do u have a static/fixed or a Dynamic/floating IP address if you have a Dynamic/floating IP. One option is TZO.com forwarding this works good enough for me.
