Need help assessing server needs

Hey all, I need a favor from some of your more technical peeps out there. Currently, my company uses a MS business solutions-based system for our accounting software. We are currently sharing a server w/ our creative dept, which naturally bogs our server down a lot.

The reason for this post is I want to make suggestions for a dedicated server, but as my frame of reference is more in building gaming rigs than business servers, I am completely out of my element.

I can't imagine our server needs are that extreme since we only have a maximum of 8 users on our system, but when people are running reports or creative is using the server for media, it bogs down so slow several users can't even open modules or even enter in currently open modules.

What is the current server running ie OS, hardware etc

To be quite honest I'm not sure, but I would assume NT. Hardware I have no clue - I will ask my IT dept and find out.

I'm thinking I'm looking for a general answer really - once I have an idea I can start the budget approval process w/ our finance dept.

Servers for purposes like the one you describe is matter of stability and durability rather than power or saving few $$ on a self built Rig.

The best solution is to get a Dell Server with Windows SBS.

P.S. If must build by self is an ego thing, then look at the specs of the Dell or HP small business servers and emulate.

No, it's an efficiency thing. Sharing servers w/ creative isn't working - we are having constant issues and our IT staff's answer to every issue is "reboot our PC" or "reboot the server."

Just trying to get better performance out of our server, if we can't from our IT folks.
